Sylphs: An Active Class

Aranea, you smug fairy. You are more devious than I ever believed. You’ve had everyone fooled with your nice act, and even now your machinations possibly keep people from seeing the full extent of your involvement. But after writing this, I’ll admit, I now respect you far more, both as a character and as an antagonist.
Hi everyone! So, I recently got into Homestuck theorizing. Lots of fun. And er, I think I might have hit some whoppers? Like, ‘holy shit’ type whoppers. Seriously, I never intended it to get as far as it did, it just happened. A lot of stuff, especially the story speculation, just surfaced on it’s own without me even really looking. Realizations began clicking one after another, and well…
This concerns the Sburb classes Sylph, Heir, and a theory that they are an active/passive pair. Sylphs are active, Heirs are passive. The verb associated with them is ‘to fix.’ This post is the first of three that examines evidence, does analysis of characters, and explores some story implications.
This is effectively Part 1 of a larger analysis. Part 1 is Sylph analysis. Part 2 is Heir analysis. Part 3 is story speculation as an extension of the theory. Each of these can be read individually, but each subsequent part make more sense if you've read the previous part.
This Part concerns Sylphs, and a theory that they are an active ‘Fixer’ class.
I’m either completely crazy, as Sylphs have been assumed to be a passive class by most theorizers, or I've really found some things, story-wise. I haven’t ruled out either option.

SPACE: Beginnings, New, Creation, Environmental, Cold, Natural, Universal, Inertia/Inaction, Present, Relativity, Infrequency, Simplicity.
TIME: Endings, Old, Destruction, Immaterial, Heat, Mechanical, Technical, Motion/Flow/Movement, Past/Future, Fragment/Piece, Recursivity, Complexity.
    Here is a list of “keywords” for the aspects of space and time. Now, you may be wondering; what does this actually mean? What are the applications for the words, and how on earth may people possibly be represented by it? These types of questions are quite critically constructive and important questions! In this essay, I’m going to attempt to showcase different ways the aspects can be represented, to fill in some details.
-Space Inertia/Inaction, Relativity, and Environmental vs Motion/Flow/Movement, Technical,  and Immaterial Time
Keep in mind: All of spacetime plays directly off of one another; one cannot exist w/out the other. You can’t have an action/event (time) occurring without a scene (space).
    Now regarding scenery, look around at the sights. It is a frame, a portrait. There are objects scattered about, producing a sort of story, an overarching story. A picture can tell a thousand words and demonstrates the overall presentation and construction of reality. Pictures are a sort of stasis that looks outward, and within it you can see how things might play out by telling what is physically there on a simply objective surface level. All of this is within the domain of space.
But while a picture can represent a 1,000 words, there IS an underlying story, so we must both “zoom in” to the technical, the individual gears that steamroll the narrative along. What was experienced within the story and what drove the pieces into action to set the story into motion? There are aspects of time to consider. Think of the laws that affect the physical constructs. There is dopaminergic activity, there is gravity, there is energy that drives things including feelings. What do the people want and where do they want to go? Where will it go, and where was it before? Time has a lot to do with metaphysics in a sense and can involve anything that alters the purely physical space.
    This all sounds magical and bodacious, but how does this apply to actual living sentient entities? Think of the aspects as a sort of %/spectrum when determining aspects of characters; are they 75% space 25% time? 75% Spacetime? There are things that eventually stand out with one aspect over the rest and aspects that divide them from the rest.
So,
A spacebound would be more concerned with space, which is in this example the inert/inactive environment. This tends to be more zoomed out and vacuous. The big picture, the current point in time, what is physically there. A spacebound is simply “One who has a space oriented aspect on reality”, which can be expressed in a great deal of ways.
Knight of Space: One who uses space/ utilizes through space aka. In this segment “one who uses inertia/inaction + environment or utilizes through (space) inertia/inaction + environment, etc.
They could be an extremely “objective” (like, pertaining to objects) oriented individual who problem solves best when focusing on the ways they could optimally utilize their environment or work with your environment to maximize skill and competency. They could find oddball ways to apply everyday objects, taking the physical properties of the environmental entities and factors to use them based on their fundamental construction. They could figure out ways to use what they wear to feel certain ways or affect how they are perceived. And much more.
Personality wise… May prioritize objectivity, the overarching big picture, the environmental factors in current circumstances, what can physically be actually done, how their space may be affecting them, and so on.
Indirectly though… they would be allowing the redistribution of/through Time (actions, events, flow, technicals, motion, movement, immaterial). By using their space and using through space, they are inadvertently moving around time. By focusing on the ways you could optimally utilize your environment or work or work with your environment to max skill and competence, you are influencing the way you move through actions and the way you flow, even move how the environment is affecting you “immaterially” (comfort, drives, emotions aka flow, movement, action)
By using objects in objects in different ways, you are technically redistributing various technical aspects that cause variable actions to occur. By using your appearance or the appearance of something, you are “moving” people immaterially (the action or responses, etc). But as a spacebound, they aren’t normally perceiving such aspects of time as much as they are space, even if they are two sides of the same coin.
    Flip the focus and you have things a rogue of time can conceptualize with more ease.
Rogue of Time Examples: Potentially more dramatic and focused on the “subjective” nature of things around them, as well as how things move them and other things/people. What stimuli produces what actions, what moves them or others towards or away from their objectives or goals across time, what actions can they take with what to result in intended actions through time and how can this be reoriented in people’s favor? They could have a knack for steering people towards their flow due to various actions along with how what happens to someone redistributes their future in addition to what variables in the past caused them to move through time in that fashion and get affected immaterially in such ways.
    Personality: Might be testy and likes to be playful and dramatic. Empathetic and inquisitive over how to alter how things play out and when, to accommodate for alterations. Might be one to reflect a lot on the past and future and a bit of a daydreamer. Motivational, probably prioritizes the subjective experience within events and how that moves what kind of motives the people may have based on the circumstances. What actions are in affect, and how is that affecting things?
    Now, key differences with timebounds and spacebounds… As a consequence of considering things through their aspect, some things must definitively set them apart (at least, to be a coherent system even if a loose one).
It seems Timebounds naturally consider variables of the impacts events have on things going on to things, such as the interactions “individual cogs in the machine” interactions along with the strain + effort put on them OVER the actual physical experience and overarching objective (definition: tending to objects)/ “universal” principles/ big picture stance (reading between the lines sorta deal) like spacebounds tend towards. As such, time bounds are more commonly more specific about details, while spacebounds tend towards more vague phrases.
    Now using all of this new information, here are some new Knight of Space possibilities to consider. A common theory is that a knight in a story is to be placed in an environment where there is a lack of their aspect/ what they can actually use, thus training them to become more adept at using their aspect and getting more creative with the applications. For this classpect, they could have little resources and have to/ be used to using every little thing they own as some kind of multipurpose tool. Or, they could lack privacy, alone, time, etc. Or something else.
    So now that some aspects of the spacetime aspects have been covered, let us cover more!
Space: Cold, beginnings, creation, new, certainty.
Time: Heat, endings, destruction, old, uncertainty.
SpaceTime: Entropy, Intervals, The Continuum.
Space can be considered the aspect of “the journey” vs time as the “destination”, considering the inevitability of of entropy, decay, and death from motion vs the uncertainty of what the future will bring regarding the journey itself along with the myriad of new things that can always come up and potentially start new, unconceived routes never before considered.
Think of the game hot vs cold. The closer you are to something, the hotter you get, and the further you get the colder you become. Now try to apply this to the timebound principles along with consideration of SCOPE (Time: Technicality/The Gear, Space: Generality/The Vacuum). The more space you have, the further you are zoomed out and the colder you get. The more time you have, the closer you are zoomed in and the hotter you get. The closer you are, the better you can see the gears and how they work, while zoomed out you can see what the machine itself is. Also, think of a campfire; the more time you are the warmer you get since you are closer to the fire, and the more space you are the cooler you get since you are further away from the flame. The further you are away from the source, the less it affects you. Now think of the firewood burning. It is in the process of motion and undergoing a very energetic reaction. The wood is no longer new and will eventually dehydrate and dissipate into old, destroyed matter at least specifically as a piece of wood (it scatters into the wind and the energy converts, but that is missing the point here). And only through time can things meet their inevitable destination, while simultaneously leaving us uncertain, as only time can tell…
    So, how does all THAT tie into personality now?? Well, a spacebound will have more focus on all of those aspects of coldness, beginnings, creation, and so on. This can be expressed in a multitude of ways, but some examples are: They try to focus on that overall journey and may be more prone to detaching from how HOT the current situation is as they think further away. As a result, spacebounds can more likely come off as more “apathetic” and “objective” (funny seeing as how they perceive more objects here) because their attention is not on how hot the irons are in the fire or what they or others might be in the moment, heated/charged by the events transpiring as result of the seemingly minor circumstances of the larger equation. This in turn may lead them to sometimes miss out on how people are actually impacted and/or affected currently if they don’t take the time to consider it as well as be rather vague and unexpressive due to their “colder/more zoomed out” mindset, as well as naturally attuned to the avenues still new and available along with the paths still open and available outside of the current scenario, as that eagle eye perspective is often great for. Now, a timebound will be more focused on aspects of time! (heat uncertainty, endings/destruction, etc). They might be more prone to take action over inaction since they are IN the fire, sometimes even THE Fire, or THE red-hot IRONS. Time IS the fire itself, and they are interacting with that flame wherever they go and glued to it like moths. Everything happening at the same time to yourself and those around you impact you both emotionally as well as physically. Their focus could also be on the results (the fire ahead and the source of energy you get to move like a metaphorical sun) of a current circumstance as well as how to end it and make it less of an uncertainty as quickly as possible or y'know… eventually. This doesn’t make time bounds automatically impatient, but as their focus is more zoomed-in they may be more attuned to the subjective experiences and what’s up with what’s going on now that alters variables. This may sometimes result in impulsivity from time to time as they involve themselves focus-wise more on the details, the actions, and what should be altered to lead to certain outcomes and so on.
    Let’s use some classpects again. I’ll use the same two to demonstrate more variation within the same classpects. Keep in mind you can always take SOME facets of an aspect for a character and make it more prominent than other facets, and maybe even not cover some aspect principles whatsoever, and that’s perfectly fine!
Knight of Space: May be prone to withdrawing themselves away from things, using space as a sort of shield more than the typical person would as well as in a more healthy way (to a degree). From the detachment, they can use it to attempt to make wiser decisions and realize alternatives or/and overarching patterns in the moment from a more “cool” perspective. They might be more aware that some things won’t really change anything that they do in the grand scheme of things and choose to be inactive for certain periods, which hopefully overall helps things. They might realize how impartial they physically come off as and (if you like this theory of masking) they could be trying often to use their appearance to project caring and empathizing more than they actually do on the inside, by overexxagerating their expressions, using fake tears, wearing more warm looking clothing, giving gifts, so on for some reason from trying to show they really do care overall, or out of fear they will appear sociopathic or something maybe. Aside from all this, a fun take is that the knight of space could be a huge go-getter that often uses any new path they find, maybe even to the point of overexerting themselves and scattering all their time inadvertently, which leads us to the rogue of time!
    For the rogue of time examples, I want you to apply what you may or may not have learned from this essay so far this time, and then explain some ways the archetype and personality may manifest:
- Some Keywords: Heat. Endings. Destruction. Old. Uncertainty. Zoom in. Technical. The Gear.
- Rogue of Time: One who allows time to be redistributed/scattered/moved or one who invites redistribution/scattering/movement through time.

-Keywords are just some examples of ways the aspects can be demonstrated, and not every keyword will even need to be used or will apply to the individual character(s). A canonical example would be the surprisingly vast difference between how Vriska and Rose interact with their aspect (class) as WELL as what aspects of the aspect they interact with most.
- This is not a divisive tool. Just a guideline on some ways to detect and/or use the classpect systems as a whole. There are time and space definitions, etymologies, and metaphorical symbolisms beyond what I used, so I encourage you to be creative and come up with your own clever spin on how the aspect may be expressed! For example, we have the Heir of Breath (Prospitian) John [12+6+0= 16/30 passive] who was a very passive component of the narrative for the first half and eventually changed the entire direction of the story actively in the second half.
