Scroll Back
Gaming study by itaykeren looks at the subject of how scrolling works in 2D video games, the hidden design methods which control the presentation of levels around the playable character:
… I was quite surprised that camera work, a subject with more than 30 years of history in games, was hardly discussed.
Scrolling or Panning refers to any attempt to display a scene that is larger than what fits in a single screen. There are many potential challenges with scrolling, like choosing what the player needs to see, what we as designers would like the player to focus on, and how to do it in a way that’s fluid and comfortable for the player.
While I’m going to focus on 2D camera systems, many of these general concepts apply to 3D as well.
The study provides various GIF examples like the ones above, and should be of interest to anyone involved with Game Design.

Oh yeah, here's a sneak peak on the mapmaking process!
Tumblr media
The "Proof of concept" post had a sprite edited onto a static background, but this is an actual world that you can legitimately run through and collide against, and the animations look pretty solid. I was pretty proud of myself for figuring out how to dynamically add polygons based off the Tiled sheet, and even change the draw order of layers! This stuff is fun :^)
Also, quick little ramble here, it's so cool finding out that the tools you've learned how to use are like.. An industry standard. It turns out that Noita uses Box2D for its hard body and particle physics, and not only does Stardew Valley use Tiled, but so does Don't Starve!
I found that last one out on accident while making a mod the other day. Crazy stuff! It makes me feel more accomplished. As someone with some pretty tough ADHD, I'm glad (and proud!) that I stuck to this and didn't just let it sit in a subfolder for the rest of my life.
Radio silence who? I finally got my butt in gear and made a leap towards one of the more daunting parts of my perfectionist-riddled process, the spriting!
Tumblr media
Granted, it's all from rips I've found online, but I got around to converting them to a consistent color palette - Most of the colors there are unused now. It's going to be a lot smoother sailing from now on, since I won't have to worry about making minor touch-ups down the road, save for adding more content into a texture atlas (The spritesheet above is from Four Swords, not Minish cap! It's enough resources to last me a good while though).
I even bought Aseprite to work with! It's seriously a way bigger improvement from GIMP, I had no clue things could be done so easily. I had to use some janky script to convert the spritesheet to frames and play them back with GIMP's animation filter before, and that doesn't even zoom in past 300%. Big difference with sprite art!

Turns out, my work has already been done for me! Shoutout to the long-defunct Zelda: The Minish Cap Tile Ripping Proyect for their willingness to scroll through the garbage data and come up with a *solid* sprite base in the end. The bank is super unfinished, but it'll help me a lot with finishing up the overworld (of which I've been putting off to put together a comprehensive tilesheet, shhh)

Oh, yeah - This is absolutely not going to be for profit, heck I might not even share it outside of my own little social circle. Nintendo's stingy as hell with their IPs - If I do end up making this a reality, and DO want to share it online, I might have to make it visually distinct from the real deal!

I don't want to psyche myself out, but computer go brrr.
Currently tearing apart some Zelda map rips for their assets, I'm makin a little project. I want to see how well I can remake Zelda 1 with my newfound abilities after completing a udemy course on love2D development :)
I got a certificate and everything! I'm putting this post here just so I can look back on everything and say, "Huh! That's where I started all those days ago!"
