What do I say? What do I do? Where are my hands supposed to be right now? Mouth agape and eyes wider than they've ever been before, he swallows dryly, clearing his throat and saying the only thing he can think of. "-- How about we start with kissing and work up to that?" Chicken shit.
Tumblr media
“Y—Yep. Kind of. Shouldn’t be thinking about you like that…as a patient or a person, but you bending me over my desk sounds pretty tempting most of the time.”

Oh boy. Oh, oh boy. "Um -- please stop looking at me like that? It's making me want to say... inappropriate things." -- "Jesus, you're pretty."                                                                                          "Did I say that out-loud?"

"Oh, I -- uh, --" Came to see you, actually. Come on, say it. Evan swallowed past the lump in his throat, shaking his head but not elaborating for at least another moment. Delayed. "Came to see y-you, actually? I'm sorry -- is this inappropriate?"
Tumblr media
When she opened the door, she was surprised to see Evan standing there. “Oh, uh, if you’re here to see Milo…he’s actually not here. He had to fly out to the States for something having to do with his job.” Mia gave the boy a smile. “I’m sorry.”

She was talking. It wasn't a negative observation on his part, but rather a careful one; it puts him off all the while managing to reel him in, and he listens complacently, nerves withering down, even if only marginally. So, she does get it. There's such a dramatically thick line between getting and understanding the basics of something, and she gets it. That knowledge alone is enough to relax his shoulders, again, even if only marginally. It's only the beginning of this session and the fact that he's been calming down as opposed to slowly tensing every muscle in his body is pretty damn impressive. Good on her, for that. He gives her a knowing look and the smallest hint of a smile, but then the topic changes, and such an expression melts away.      "No, probably not, Mi -- but it's not like you chose to have known me so personally and then wind up my therapist, and it's not like I'm going to tell on you." Who would he tell? Why would he tell anyone? He considers himself to be a literal lone wolf -- seeing as this is the first time he's talked to someone other than his mother in ages. Spoken civilly, even longer. "In more colorful words, yeah, I did. She didn't even respond. She knows that she might as well have left me for dead when she dropped me off that weekend and never came back -- and I hope the guilt is suffocating." He's looking past her as he speaks, now, breaths deeper and more apparent.       "For her to come back now and expect gratitude for reeling me back into the shitstorm of a life that she built for me is a completely bizarre concept. No, she didn't know that he had multiple personalities, and she must not have known even half of the things wrong with him, but she abandoned me -- and I'm never going to forgive that."  ---- "Don't apologize. It's making it easier."
Tumblr media
Mia chewed on her bottom lip as she listened to the boy talk. She frowned and sat up again, scrawling down a few things before placing her chin in her hand. “I know what you mean. Most therapists just sit and stare and don’t really give advice. I know plenty of them and people that have anxiety…well, that basically makes them worse. That doesn’t help a damn thing.” She said quietly and ran her fingers through her hair. “I know from experience. My family kind of forced me into therapy when we were in school and I had to be switched between different ones because none of them helped. No one actually listened to what I was saying.” She said softly. “But that’s not…what I’m here for, I’m here to give you advice and I’m here to listen and tell you things that can help you.”
When he mentioned his mother, she arched a brow. “You lived with your Uncle that whole time.” She murmured and pressed her lips together into a thin line. “That wasn’t right of me. I’m not supposed to even comment on what I already knew.” She did know that he would go to their house covered in bruises. It was like she, Milo, and Evan could sit and count the bruises they got on a daily basis. Evan would blame the sports he played, but Mia knew the difference between sports and abuse bruises by that point. Swallowing thickly, she just waved her pen at him to continued. “Even if you don’t…want to thank her. Do you just want nothing to do with her? Have you thought about telling her that? I mean you were raised by someone else for most of your life. You’re not used to getting someone like that just…suddenly caring.” Their mother was more of a mother to Evan than anything.
Now is when she kept her mouth shut so she could listen to him. She leaned forward and sipped from her tea. She opened his file again and flipped through it. Yes, he was abused. Mia already knew that. She could already tell he had anxiety, he also could possibly suffer from flashbacks and nightmares, but she’d bring that up later once he finished speaking. Glancing up, she smiled gently at him and cleared her throat. “I apologize for speaking so much.” She murmured and fixed her blouse again as she sat back in her chair.

Water. Water. The hesitation time that he takes is borderline embarrassing when he shuffles away from his stuck position in the center of the room, hands practically trembling as he reaches for a cup and fills it -- keeping still is the only thing on his mind as he watches the water rise, and he watches so intensely that he almost doesn't notice that he's filled it to the brim and it's spilling over. The chill liquid against his finger is enough to draw him back to our level and he sips from the top, leveling the water to a more desirable state and hoping to God she didn't see any of that. She seemed to have been busy taking notes, luckily, and looks up right when he composes himself. Evan one, anxiety zero.  It's when she smiles at him. That's when it sinks in. His therapist is his childhood... friend, Mia, and she's going to find out so much about him that he'd always considered himself to be protecting from her. His lips part and he clicks his tongue as his words, not for the first time, escape him and he nods his head in simple agreement. Mia over Dr. Cooper was much less nerve-wrecking. Evan strides forward and takes a seat in the designated spot, listening to her instructions and trying to gather his thoughts. The thing is, this might as well be his first actual therapy session -- considering he never gave the others anything to work with, and honestly, this session was going to be the first time he spoke for more than a few seconds in... months? He just wasn't really a talker. That was all there was to it. He clears his throat, avoiding her gaze at first and focusing in on something to the right of her -- the seashell. Look at the seashell, focus on it, and talk. "I'm thinking it had to do with my lack of participation, which, I fully intended on continuing today, but ----" but, you're you. "---- I don't know. Before now, I just, didn't want to waste my breath on words that wouldn't be heeded anyways, you know? I'm not here on my own dime, and I certainly am not by choice, on that note. My mother's paraded herself into my life, as an adult, and expects me to thank her for caring for me and parenting me like she should have ten years ago. More than that, even."

She heard the secretary say his name and her head snapped up and toward the door. The boy that had helped her save her twin from multiple beatings in school even when she was going through plenty of her own. Mia just kind of stared at him for a few moments and it seemed like he was just as shocked as she was. “Hello, Mr. Griffin.” She gave him a gentle smile and stood up from her desk before fixing her blouse. “Have a seat. I’ll…just call you Evan if it’ll make you feel more comfortable.” Mia cleared her throat and walked around the desk to take a seat, pulling Evan’s file out with a notebook of her own. “It’ll just be a moment…I need to take a few notes.” She said without looking up at him. “You can grab a glass of water or some coffee from the other side of the room if you’d like while you wait.”
It was a two hour session because he apparently had a lot in his file and a lot of doctors had dropped him. As she looked it over, her nostrils flared because neither her…well, Milo may have known, but she didn’t know what the boy went through at home. Her stomach turned and then she got professional about it again. When she cleared her throat again, she folded her hands in front of her on the desk and gave Evan a small smile. “You can…y’know just call me Mia instead of Dr. Cooper if you want. Anyway, you…have quite a file and you’ve been switched between quite a few psychologists.” She said as she flipped through said file. Biting into her lip, she sighed and opened to a list of medications and took note of what he’d taken over the last few years, which worked, and which didn’t.
“Okay, can you tell me why you think you were switched in between so many psychologists, Evan? And I don’t wanna know the reasons the others have told you. I want to know your take on it. That’s how I do things here. I’m not dropping you, I can tell you that. While you’re here, you’re supposed to let it all out…so let it all out. Gimme the reasons first and then say whatever comes to mind after that.” Mia said and took a sip of her tea before leaning back in her seat and playing with the pen in her hands.
