Chapter 1: A New Job
Zephyr trudged down the hallway as the bell for passing period began to ring, his fluffy blonde hair falling a little below his shoulders, the ends of it used to be dyed purple, but now it had faded to a more lavender color. He sighed, knowing that he wouldn’t get to his next class on time, he never liked school much anyways, so he couldn’t care less. He made his way to his locker, before pulling out the book he needed for his next class, he looked into the mirror on the inside of his locker, his dark green eyes stared back at him, they were a little too feminine for his liking. He seemed to dwell on the thought for too long and quickly closed the door, the bright red of the locker contrasting the rest of the beiges the school had painted the walls and the tile floors. As he continued walking, Emily appeared next to him. She had her light brown hair tied up into a high ponytail with a scrunchie, her bright blue eyes and wide smile seemed fake to him, she was wearing a tank top and a short skirt, like most of the girls wore.
”Hey Zephyr,” She said, “skipping class?”
“Nope! Just taking my time to get there” Zephyr replied, trying to ignore her, he never liked any of the popular girls, although they all seem to wanna hang around him.
“That's too bad, that’s what I’m doing.” Emily said giving him that puppy dog eyes face he always hated. “ Math is not that important anyways.”
“Right,” He said, still trying to ignore her, “Well it looks like this is my class, so bye.”
“Oh ok bye!” Emily said, overstaying her welcome, “we should talk more sometimes!”
Zephyr just continued entering the classroom, leaving her standing there.
Later that afternoon, while Zephyr was packing up his backpack, a note fell out of the top of his locker, it was written on a note card, the handwriting was almost unreadable, clearly Miranda‘s work. It read,
Hey Zephyr!
Super top secret meeting in the library about a new job!  You better come!!
-Miranda
Zephyr sighed
“Miranda, it’s a Thursday,” he said to himself, exasperated
Zephyr pushed open the large double doors to the library, an instant chill sent down his spine after entering the space, the school's library was one of those ones where the bookshelves were so high you needed a ladder to get some of them, all the floors were carpeted and it somewhat smelled like a museum. To be fair it really was one, ghosts were floating around it all the time, he tried to tune them out most of the time, but his powers didn’t give him much of his choice. He had to suck it up every time they were there during class, or else everyone would know his secret. Mid thought a book came flying at his head, he just barely dodged it as it hit the floor behind him. He turned to look at it, the cover staring back at him reading, ‘American History 1890-1990’. He picked it up and turned to a man Miranda sitting at the top one of the bookshelves, her long wavy auburn brown hair cascading down the back of the shelves, her purple eyes gleaming against her pale skin, her legs kicking the bookshelf, like a girl at a sleepover. A smug smile on her face, Zephyr ignored that.
“This is outdated,” he said, nonchalant flipping through the pages, “and get down from there will you?”
“Are you gonna ignore the fact that I just threw a book at you?” Miranda said, hands on hips.
“You've done it enough times that I have just gotten used to it.” Zephyr said, mirroring her expression. “You’re gonna have to find a new way to get my attention.”
“Whatever Zephyr,” she said, rolling her eyes. “I assume you got my note?”
“Sure did, can we get this over quickly? I have homework to do.” He said, folding his arms.
“Sure thing, Mr. impatient.” Miranda said, a purple glow surrounded her hand as she used her magic to grab the books around her, also glowing purple, as well as the one that was previously in Zephyr’s hand. She floated each of them perfectly into place until she got to the US history one, and paused.
“ You forgot where it went.” Zephyr said with a smug smile.
“how am I supposed to remember where the book I threw at you went!” Miranda looked up at him, frustrated. Then quickly shove the book into one of the open slots.
“Alright, where is Kian? Let’s get this meeting started.” Zephyr said, rubbing his hands together.
“I don’t know where the hell he is, why don’t you find him.” Miranda said, hopping down from the bookshelf.
“He’s your brother, how can he be that hard to find?” Zephyr said, almost immediately spotting Kian’s auburn hair between the bookshelves, he made his way over to where there is only two books on the bookshelf between him and Kian, pushing over the two books and poking his head through. As both the books bounced off Kian’s head, Kian turned to look up at Zephyr face flushed, whether it was from anger or embarrassment Zephyr couldn’t tell, Kian had the same auburn hair as Miranda but shorter almost like a mop on his head, his eyes were a yellowish gray, the color Miranda’s would have been if she wasn’t a witch, his glasses balanced at the edge of his nose.
“Zephyr!” Kian said, turning to him, “what the heck!?”
Zephyr shrugged “ whatcha reading?”
“History book about our town and surrounding area, trying to look for any traces of male witches, thought it might help you figure out your power more,” Kian said, holding up the book.
Zephyr tensed “oh that’s nice…. Did you find anything?”
“Sadly no, nothing but conspiracies, with little evidence to back them up.” he said, setting down the book with a defeated expression on his face.
“Well maybe I’m the only one,” Zephyr said, lying through his teeth. He didn’t like lying to his friends, but he felt he had to. “Maybe I’m the chosen one or something.”
“Maybe,” Kian said with a smile, he set the book back in its spot and walked around the corner. “Okay, we can start the meeting now.”
“Okay! So a young couple is looking to buy a house, the problem is they believe there’s a ghost in there, our job is to get it out.” Miranda said, “any questions?”
“Only comments,” Kian said, pulling out a piece of paper. “We have some new recruits so I’ll be joining us on this job. I thought we might need a little bit more help, and some people were interested.”
“recruits!” Miranda said, a look of frustration crossed her face. “ Kian we talked about this, I hate all the girls in our school and I told you not to go around recruiting them!”
“these girls seem nice, and they were interested, pleaseeee, I kind of also already promised them payments so…”. Kian said, anxious.
”Fine,” Miranda sighed. “ But if anything happens that I don’t like they aren’t coming back, okay?”
“Okay,” Kian said, rolling his eyes.
“Alright,  well that wraps up the meeting we can head out now” Miranda said, picking up her backpack that was next to the bookshelf and slinging it over her shoulder.
“That was it?! You couldn’t have just texted me that.” Zephyr said, annoyed.
“If we texted you, your parents could read it.” Miranda said like she was stating the most obvious thing ever.
”My parents couldn’t give a crap what I do outside of school as long as I’m passing.” Zephyr rolled his eyes and headed out.
“way to make him mad Miranda.” Kian said, crossing his arms.
“I'm just saying phones can be confiscated and be looked through. You never know who’s trying to find your information” Miranda responded.
“you’re acting more paranoid than me, and that’s an accomplishment,” Kian said, grabbing his backpack and heading to the door.
Miranda just rolled her eyes and followed him out the door.
