HOW HOT?
The faster you go, the hotter it gets. You can see how no sealant was able to hold up to this kind of heat to keep the fuel from leaking. The SR-71 was cooled by the fuel. Usually, it was a KC 135Q that would refuel the SR-71; after refueling, my Dad, Butch Sheffield, who flew the SR-71 for eight years, told me that they would enjoy a cooling of the Cockpits until they were running low on fuel again.
