Why Xander Deserves Less: A Rant (Or 'I just saw the 16th episode of the 2nd Season of Buffy The Vampire Slayer.')

I just saw 'Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered' and I need to complain about it. I know I'm like... two decades and a bit late and there's a feature length video on YouTube about why Xander sucks (which I'm waiting to see till after I've finished the show) but I like to talk about Buffy here.

My thought process was actually pretty funny because I actually had hope for real character development. I mentioned in my previous blog posts as I've been watching - last night, matter of fact - that I actually kinda like Cordelia and Xander together. I would say it's actually the best thing they've done for his character in the show, as they're actually funny together paired and play off each other well. Then as soon as the episode started I thought, "hey, this is oddly kinda mature of the both of them, that being they're both people with little to nothing in common but trying to make it work, that's kinda... mature, right?" which is... debatable but it makes for a funny and interesting dynamic, as they're both perhaps the most immature in the 'Scooby Gang.'

Then the scene in the screenshot above happened and I felt a glimmer of hope in my chest, because it felt like the writers were actually kinda on the same wavelength as me, *then* Cordelia breaks up with him and I thought... hey! This might just be what Xander's character needs for real development. Maybe his takeaway from this will be, "I lost a girl I actually quite liked because I'm an asshole and generally a weirdo creep to people, plus I can't stop mentioning the other girl I'm not over! Mayhaps I should do some introspection as to the content of my character so that in the future I won't lose someone I like due to my shortcomings as a person."

and the episode ends with Cordelia coming back to him

In summary, probably the worst episode of the show thus far, which sucks because it's preceded by a solid 3 episode run of pretty great episodes. In the future, I will temper my expectations to Xander as a character and strictly understand him as the Joss Whedon self-insert that he is.

I recently played the demo for Pathologic 3 Quarantine, and although I never completed the 2nd one, these games fascinates me in the most morbid curiosity of how it was made and its inspirations. Mixing theatre with esoteric setting and the medical field. A true play in the theater of pain.

At first glance, the gameplay of the demo looks more streamlined by focusing only on two stats: Apathy and Mania. The scale of your seesaw ever so going down making you more nihilist, depressed and walk slow while becoming manic makes you faster and progressively losing health. Also, I love the medical diagnosis gameplay they included. It is the sort of deductive mechanic that I wish the game Vampyr had to make your protagonist more grounded in their profession and the world.

I'll probably return to the second game soon and enjoy the suffering.
