Introduction

Out here, everything’s about numbers: mining yields, territory owned, armies controlled, wages earned. There’s one number above all else, though: death tolls.

It’s not about whether people die, they say, but how many.

Our job is to control that number. Protect a mining project, relieve a fort, build defenses. We save who we can, when we can, but that’s only part of the equation.

Because you don’t just manipulate a number by keeping it down. Forcing it up at the right time can work just as well.

That’s what comes of being in the Outriders.
