PSA: Tumblr/Wordpress is preparing to start selling our user data to Midjourney and OpenAI.

you have to MANUALLY opt out of it as well.

to opt out on desktop, click your blog ➡️ blog settings ➡️ scroll til you see visibility options and it’ll be the last option to toggle.

to opt out on mobile, click your blog ➡️ scroll then click visibility ➡️ toggle opt out option.

if you’ve already opted out of showing up in google searches, it’s preselected for you. but you also have to opt out for each blog you own separately, so if you’d like to prevent AI scraping your blog i’d really recommend taking the time to opt out. (source)

What is this about the tumblr staff wanting to sell art data to midjourney?

An ex-colleague of mine mentioned yesterday that there may be contacts between Automattic and midjourney in that direction, but nothing is public yet and I don't have any more info. They probably won't have anything specific to share either, since they left the company weeks ago too. That being said:

I have no reason to doubt my ex-coworker word, they are a trustworthy person.

Tumblr's CEO has been absurdly enthusiastic (comically, even) about AI, and is a big fan of LLMs and 'AI' companies.

A deal with midjourney could solve tumblr financial issues (not the same company, but openAi is paying up to 5 million/year to news companies to use their content as training data... tumblr generates several orders of magnitude more content than any newspaper or any media company and it only would need a 20 to 30 million per year deal to be profitable)

So I don't have any extra info yet, but I'm keeping my ears open.

Currently watching Oeuf and I kept replaying the scene where Hannibal pricks his finger with Will’s fishhook because I was trying to figure out the purpose of it.

Then I realized, Hannibal made a secret blood oath to bind himself to Will forever.

Dennis Trumble in his landmark book “The Blood Covenant: A Primitive Rite and Its Bearings on Scripture” wrote:

“An agreement between two contracting parties, originally sealed with blood; a bond, or a law; a permanent religious dispensation. The old, primitive way of concluding a covenant (to cut a covenant) was for the covenanters to cut into each other's arm and suck the blood, the mixing of the blood rendering them "brothers of the covenant".

The whole episode has to do with family and chosen family specifically. Hannibal asked Will about his mother and Will admitted that they’re not close. Then Hannibal brings up Abigail to further plant the seed in Will’s mind that they’re both her fathers. Hannibal already created the familial covenant with Will by drinking his own blood and sealing their fate, he just needs Will to open his eyes and choose him back.
