Tumblr media
i’ve been really productive the past few months, which is actually quite rare for me bc i’m a slave to procrastination i get burnt out v easily. this time was a little different, i managed to keep my productivity levels really high for a whole 2 months all the way until exams ended, studying every single day without fail, around 10 hours a day, when i used to only do an average of 3 or 4. so here’s what worked for me and what didn’t!
what works: schedule your day
what happens when ur a virgo studyblr? u plan. i would write out everything i needed to accomplish for the day, the night before, and be really specific about it. i would then plug in the timings, this works for me, but u can choose to put the time in first and plan what u want to do around the time.
a structured time plan pressures me and i end up getting everything done, especially when i set an alarm on my phone for all the timings!
what does not: cramming a lot of hours into a day
12+ hour work days are ideal, especially when u watch all the ‘study with me: 14 hour work day!’ youtube videos, but they are just tedious and unreasonable.
let’s face it, even if u do complete one or two long study days, ur just gonna get bored and tired and have no mood to continuing this for a week or more. slow and steady wins the race!
what works: tweaking the pomodoro technique
i hate the pomodoro method. at the 25 minute mark, i’m normally on a roll and super focused on the task; and the 5 minute breaks were too short for me to actually take a break.
that’s why i tweaked it to 45-minute study sessions with 10-minute breaks, and after 3 study sessions, a 30-minute break. longer study sessions meant i get a break when i really start to get restless, and longer breaks gave me more time to recharge. i suggest tweaking this to match what works for you.
what does not work; doing too many / too little subjects a day
1. u don’t want to cram all the same topics and subjects into one day. ultimately, it’s a choice of spending 8 hours solely on a subject / topic and not touching it for the next few days / weeks, OR doing just 2 or 3 hours of one subject / topic each day over a few days / week
2. just thinking about doing only one subject for a whole day already tires me out. i have tried it, but normally i get so sick and tired of it that after a few hours, i can’t bring myself to focus on it any longer. on the contrary, if i keep switching between subjects, i get super confused because i have to remember too much of very different info.
what works: leaving the last portion of your day ambiguous
i like to start and end my days early. but in the process, i found a benefit of ending them early: i end up w a chunk of time at the end where there are two scenarios:
i’m super motivated and want to continue studying
i’m rly tired and cannot bring myself to continue bc i need a break !1!!
surprisingly, option 1 does happen a lot. and i think this is a rly good work-life balance. u don’t get burnt out easily, but from time to time, u get a bonus extra few hours of work done!
what does not work: forgoing sleep
sleep is so important omg. 3 hours of studying while sleepy = 1 hour of studying when ur refreshed and ur brain’s working. a tired mind is a slow mind, and an awake mind is a fast mind!
do not worry about that rly hard chapter that u must understand and complete! ur mind continue to works even when ur sleeping, i assume bc it’s rewiring and sorting through new information. after waking up, i find myself being able to better remember and understand information that i struggled on the night before!
what works: finding out ur energy levels and use it to ur advantage
some people work best at 6am and can’t focus after 9pm, some people can’t focus before 11am and work best at midnight. take note of and chart ur energy levels throughout the day for about a week or so, are u particularly refreshed in the morning? do u feel urself always dozing off at 4? are u the most productive at night?
work ur body clock out and work around it! every body functions differently! like in the last point, 3 hours of studying at ur worst energy levels = 1 hour of studying at ur peak energy level! forcing urself to work when ur body refuses to do so will only lead to procrastination.
i sincerely hope these few tips can help u out w being productive! what are some of the things u do to get shit done?

The Hogwarts House as Students (Based on People I Know)
Gryffindor
listens to anime osts while studying
highlights everything, gOD
acts like a roman orator during class reports
“pisses off” the teacher with their jokes but is secretly probably the teacher’s fave student
mnemonics
either studies ahead of time or DOESN’T SLEEP FOR 48 HOURS BECAUSE THEY PROCRASTINATED (there is no in between)
 flashcards galore
gets elected as class president because their friends thought it would be funny (but is actually pretty good at the job??)
determination to succeed even when they’re already too done with everything
Ravenclaw
has 100 highlighters and a system for how to use them
“do you think i’ll still have to take the exam if i die from caffeine overdose?”
really creative bullet journals (or minimalist layouts)
“how do you have such perfect handwriting?” “oh, it’s always been that way.” *actually spent 1000 hours perfecting it*
scrolls through the studyblr tag and calls it studying
posts something on studyblr and calls it studying
procrastinates a lot tbh.
classical music
gets anxious about not studying. still not studying because they’re too anxious to start. (relatable?)
always getting irrational thoughts about their “failing” grades
Hufflepuff
lots of colorful pens
a e s t h e t i c  study spaces
extra af when it comes to projects (they’ll probably wear a mammoth costume during their report about the ice age. y’know, for authenticity)
working really hard for a subject they are not good at. feeling very satisfied when they get a high grade on that subject.
probably expects the worst so they don’t get disappointed
helping others study
sharing their notes
comforts other students who are having nervous breakdowns but they probably need comforting as well
all-nighters.
Slytherin
motivational quotes
studying extra hard for a subject someone told them they’re not good at, purely for the satisfaction of proving them wrong
they’re e x t r a af, in general
getting really high grades, but only seeing that one grade that was lower than they expected
either really organized or really messy (but, like, in an organized way)
mind maps and flowcharts
look calm as fuck when it comes to tests but it’s probably because they’re disassociating lmao
working hard not just because they like it, but because they simply don’t like the thought of failing
really supportive of their friends but at the same time bitter when they get higher marks at something (but only because they see it as a sign of personal failure)
has high standards for them themselves. at the same time, they feel like everyone expects too much of them.

UPCAT Tips
By Cam Studies Life
First, I’d like to thank @studeebean for asking me about this! It was a joy to recall and relive my UPCAT experience.
Guide to Each Test
Language Proficiency (both Eng. and Fil.) - This part tests your basic knowledge of grammar for both languages (i.e. correct usage of words, verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, pronoun-antecedent agreement, etc.) If you have no problem with grammar and composition, I don’t think you’ll find this part difficult. BUT I suggest that you refresh yourself on the subject-verb agreement and pronoun-antecedent agreement topics for English because these were tricky. For Filipino, review the correct usage of words.
Math -  The Math portion in the UPCAT was relatively easy, depending on your relationship with the subject. Make sure to review basic algebra (especially answering word problems!!), intermediate algebra (solving systems of linear equations, solving complex fractions, etc.), computing for the measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode), analytic geometry (equations of a circle, parabola, ellipse, hyperbola), and geometry (interior and exterior angles of polygons, transversal lines, etc.). It was easy, BUT the coverage was wide.
Science - The Science portion of the UPCAT usually contains many graphs and diagrams. You need to learn how to analyze these data in order to arrive at the correct answer. Also, pay attention to the descriptions being placed under the diagrams because - on more than one occasion - I was able to determine the correct answer by doing so. For this part, grasp the basics for each science (Bio, Chem, Physics, Earh Sci - especially Earth Science!!!), but also sharpen your analytical skills.
Reading Comprehension (English and Filipino) - Surprisingly, this was the most difficult portion of the UPCAT. If you’re an avid (and fast) reader, I don’t think you’ll find this part challenging - at least, the English portion. I was stressed out during the Filipino selection because English was my first language. I suggest that you widen your Filipino vocabulary and get used to reading Filipino selections. Another tip for the reading comprehension portion is to read the question/s for each passage first before reading the actual passage. This way, you can start looking for the answers instead of reading the text from start to finish, which is just a waste of time. Determine what you need to look for and start scanning the text, then move on to the next passage.
Before the UPCAT
1.     Start reviewing early.
The material covered in CETs is usually very diverse, so you need to start reviewing early. I suggest that you finish a majority of your reviewing during the summer because once school starts, other things such as homework, projects, extracurricular activities, etc. will compete for your time. However, try to squeeze in some review time in your busy schedule to keep the material you’ve reviewed fresh.
2.     Attend a review program.
Although this is not a prerequisite to passing the UPCAT (in fact, my best friend did not take any review classes at all, but he managed to pass the entrance tests to the top 4 Universities in the country, including UP Diliman), I learned useful techniques from the review classes I took. Not only do they refresh you on the important lessons you’ve learned over the years, they also teach you effective strategies for taking CETs.
3. Pay attention to your grades.
Your chances of passing the UPCAT all depend on your UPG, which is computed in the following manner: 60% UPCAT score, 40% grades. In my case, my UPCAT application asked for my grades from Grade 9 – 11 and my class standing/ranking. Again, being the topnotcher of your batch is not a prerequisite to entering UP, but grades still matter. However, don’t despair if you know your grades aren’t stellar. That same best friend I mentioned earlier wasn’t much of an academic achiever. Your UPCAT performance still matters greatly.
4. Take many practice tests.
I think this is the most effective way to review for an exam. Apart from the practice exams that my review center gave me, I also bought some of the MSA Review books. I answered them while timing myself, and I regularly checked my progress. UP also releases an UPCAT online reviewer, which was like a mock test. I really recommend that you try this because it features questions/topics which are quite similar to the ones that appeared in the actual test.
During the UPCAT
1.     When in doubt, make an intelligent guess instead of leaving the item blank.
Actually, I’ve heard many conflicting opinions about this matter. The UPCAT is the only CET that enforces the” right-minus-wrong rule”, meaning for every wrong answer, ¼ of a point is deducted from the number of right answers. Because of this, I’ve read tips from other blogs saying that it’s better to just leave the item blank than to risk a wrong answer. However, you lose the chance of getting one right answer. My math teacher finally put a stop to my dilemma when he presented a computation which showed that you have a greater chance of getting a high score if you answer everything (I’m sorry, I can’t remember his computation haha). When you encounter a difficult question, eliminate the outrageous or impossible choices then choose from the remaining ones.
2.     Answer as quickly and as accurately as you can.
Time is of the essence. And when there’s a time limit, you need to use your time carefully. Don’t get stuck on a difficult question. Move on to the next one and just come back for it. IF you run out of time, shade a random circle. (see advice above)
3.     Bring water and snacks.
You’re allowed to eat while taking the test because there are no breaks in between. The UPCAT is almost 5 hours long, so you need to bring something to eat. I remember bringing a pack of Oreos and a mamon (hehe). One of the test takers in my room brought a large bag of Lays for himself. To each, his own. Don’t bring something that’s too messy though, because you might stain your test paper with it.
After the UPCAT
1.     REJOICE. For a while, then start preparing for the next CETs hays.
2.     Wait anxiously for the results.
The UPCAT is most likely the first test you’ll take (around August or September). We were told that the UPCAT results will be released on February or March of the following year. Imagine the wait. THEN, in true UP fashion, the results were released late one night in December, five days before Christmas. Stay tuned to social media (that’s how my friend found out about the results being released early) because other students are bound to be tweeting the good news – especially in December.
Good to luck to all UPCAT takers this year! 😊

Everything You Need To Know About MLA Format
General Format:
8.5 x 11 inch paper
Double spaced
Times New Roman font
12 pt font
Only one space after each period
1 inch margins on all sides
Indent the first line of each paragraph by half an inch
Use a header that includes your last name and page number in the top right hand corner
The First Page:
In the upper left hand corner:
Your Name
Your Instructor’s Name
The Class Title
The Date (Day Month Year)
The title of your paper should be one double-space down and should not be bolded, italicized, or underlined
The beginning of your paper should start one double-space down from the title with the first line indented by half an inch
What to Italicize and Quote:
Book titles are italicized
Play titles are italicized
Poem titles have quotation marks
Article titles have quotation marks
Chapter titles have quotation marks
In-Text Citations:
When you know the author’s last name
(Last Name Page Number) or
(Last Name Paragraph or Line Number)
When you don’t know the author’s last name
(Book Title Page Number)
(Article Title Page Number)
Remember to italicize the book titles and put the article titles in quotation marks
Works Cited Page:
Begin your Works Cited page on a separate page at the end of your research paper. It should have the same one inch margins and header as the rest of your paper
Label the page “Works Cited” (do not italicize or put in quotations) on the top of the page and center it
Double space all citations but do not skip spaces between entries
Indent the second line of a citation by half an inch
List sources in alphabetical order
If the source has more than one author, the first given name appears in last name, first name format and the following authors appear in last name, first name format separated by commas. The last author’s name should be preceded by an “and”
Citing Print Sources:
Book or Poem:
Last Name, First Name. Title of Book or Poem. City of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Print.
Magazine or Newspaper Article:
Last Name, First Name. “Title of Article.” Title of Periodical Day Month Year: pages. Print.
Journal Article:
Last Name, First Name. “Title of Article.” Title of Journal Volume.Issue (Year): pages. Print.
Citing Web Sources:
Whole Website:
Name of Site. Sponsor or Publisher, date of resource creation. Web. Date of access.
Web Page or Web Article:
Last Name, First Name. “Title of Article.” Name of Site. Sponsor of Publisher, date of resource creation. Web. Date of access.
Online Journal Article:
Last Name, First Name. “Title of Article.” Title of Journal Volume.Issue (Year): pages. Web. Date of access.
Note: Don’t forget to indent the second line in the citation. I did not indent the examples because the indents on tumblr mobile and tumblr desktop differ starkly and I figured this was probably the less confusing way to write the information needed for a citation (trust me)
Unknown Information in Citations:
If the author is unknown, begin citation with the title
If the publisher is unknown, write “n.p.” in its place (no quotation marks)
If the publishing date is unknown, write “n.d.” in its place (no quotation marks)
I hope this guide is as useful for me as it it for you!
