The Bangkok Boy Elevator Pitch
If you were a bit indecisive on starting this series then this post is for you my friend! Prepare for a LONG post so I'll insert a page break somewhere soon.
The Bangkok Boy is a gritty, violent, and thrilling mafia Thai BL. Honestly it might even be considered a drama with queer leads because that's what it feels like. Anyways, let me start by laying the groundwork which is covered in the first 2.5 eps so you'll know what to expect. The first 2 eps are backstory and Sun's time in prison. He doesn't get out of prison until ep 3 and that's also when he meets Peace.
Overview of eps 1-3:
Our main character Sun is the youngest son of a well respected Mafia Leader. His father takes pride in taking care of his community and keeping drugs away from his territory and he's being pressured by another leader to introduce drugs to his community. On Sun's 18th birthday he loses his best friend (who was in love with him), his father, and his freedom all before he blows out the candles on his cake. His father gets murdered in an alley, his best friend gets stabbed during an insane brawl with the Korean sector of the mafia, and he winds up going to jail for that friend's death for THREE years. During his incarceration Sun is targeted by the gang inside and must literally fight to stay alive and keep from getting r*ped (so trigger warning for that). At 21, when he gets out of prison Sun's main goal is to find his younger sister Mei, get vengeance for his fallen friend and father, and take back his father's territory. Sun is fiery and filled with passion and he's determined.
Our other main character Jo Sungmin (or Peace) is a young half Thai-half Korean 20 yr old philosophy major (I'm guessing 20 because he's in his 2nd yr of Uni in ep 1). I'm assuming he's around 23 when he meets Sun. Anyways he just wants to earn his degree and possibly join a Master's program. He's an art lover and he wants to live his life the way he chooses. Living up to his nickname, Peace doesn't like violence and he doesn't want any parts of the Mafia. Unfortunately his father has other plans. Peace's father is the head of the local Korean mafia and he's eager to have his son join him even if it's by force. He even sends his son to oversee the murder of...Sun's father. Peace carries out tasks for his father and agrees to learn the business in exchange for an art gallery, but when his father tricks him into doing the unthinkable Peace decides he wants to end it all by committing suicide. He wants to jump off a bridge. Peace is a sweet and quiet young man.
How they Meet:
Sun visits Peace's art gallery where Peace is showcasing his photography. One of the images catches Sun's attention because it reminds him of a picture his dear friend Kong showed him. Sun seems immediately taken with Peace. After his visit Sun and Peace bump into each other on the street right before Peace has a meeting with his father. And then Sun happens upon him right before he's about to jump. Sun literally talks him off the ledge and from there Sun shows more and more interest in Peace. And Peace is definitely vibing with Sun too.
The series is captivating because we get a budding forbidden romance between them. Sun has a vendetta against Peace's brother for killing his friend and he also doesn't know Peace is involved with his father's death. And on Peace's side, his father has threatened Sun's very existence if Peace even THINKS about starting anything with him. His father wants Peace to give him an heir. Peace seems hopeless and Sun is very determined to get everything he wants.

How will their love blossom? Will it be destroyed before it blooms? Will they stand together and fight? Will they protect each other?
Will they fight each other? Hate each other? Or will it all end in betrayal and death? Who knows? Let's find out together!
Other things going on:
A drug epidemic. The mafia territories going to war with each other. Peace's father is setting multiple plans into motion to ensure that he's the head king pin. Sun working double time to rebuild his own forces. Also there's a man wreaking havoc all over the place and he's enjoying it.
Key Characters:
Songphum: Sun's father. He had two wives (both are dead) and a set of kids with each wife. With his main wife we have Jack and Jinny. And with his second wife we have Sun and his sister Mei. He seemed like a kind man and he loved his kids a lot and he was well respected. Also he is FOINE!

Jack and Jinny: Jack is the eldest of all the siblings but he only really seems to care about Jinny. He calls on Sun when he needs him and with Mei he puts in little to no effort.

Mei: Sun's beloved baby sister. She unfortunately gets sex trafficked and gets addicted to drugs. She does seem to have a storyline with a young EMT named Cherries.

Tim and Gawin: Two of Sun's friends who were also in the brawl on his birthday. Sun is working to recruit them to help take his territory back. HELLO!? Where are the Top Piyawat fans!?

Tan: Sun's friend and old Muay Thai coach. He used to own a boxing gym before Sun went to prison. Sun has also recruited him for the takeover.

Mr. Jo: Peace's father. He's putting all his time, money, and resources into taking over the entire mafia circuit. He wants to be the ultimate kingpin. He's got a wire-thin temper and he also seems to be ill. He is trying to get Peace ready to take over and also have his other sons fall in line behind Peace.

Jihoon and Junho: Peace's older brothers. Jihoon was at the brawl and Junho participated in it. He's actually the one that killed Sun's friend Kong. They're both more than willing to commit themselves to the Mr. Jo and the mafia life. They are definitely more cold and callous than Peace.

Madam Yao: Another territory leader. She's the main one peddling drugs into the city and owns most of the territories. She and Songphum were friends before he was killed. She has taken over his territory since then.

Aim: Madam Yao's right hand. He's bonkers and he loves being in the mafia. He enjoys killing and hurting people. He is Sun's main enemy at the moment.

Why I think you should watch it with me:
The series has plot, it has action, it has mafia, it's gory, it's violent, and it's thrilling. But alongside all of that Sun and Peace are sweet and soft together. Sun really seems to dote on Peace even though Peace is older. They both seem protective of each other.
Where Peace is calm and reserved, Sun is loud and boisterous. Sun loves to fight and he wants to be a gang leader while Peace is actively trying to distance himself from the violence. They're opposites who live in the same crazy world. It's exciting to see them interact. It will be exciting to see how they overcome their obstacles and hopefully work together so they'll both achieve their goals and have each other by the end of things. And who doesn't love a forbidden gangster love story??? It's going to get hot and heavy between them but also just plain heavy.

And on the non-romantic front we get to see an all out turf war. We get to see brotherhood and camaraderie. We get to see manipulation and plotting. We get to see the bad guys win. We also get to see them lose. We get to see vengeance. We get to see betrayal. We get to see terrible people be terrible til the very end. No one has clean hands.
This series is the whole package...and maybe we'll finally get to see someone actually get to keep the gang life instead of giving it up.
It airs Saturday afternoons around 10:45 PM Bangkok Time. You can watch it on GagaOOLala anad WeTV/Tencent.There are currently 5 episodes out right now and ep 6 drops this Saturday the 30th. There will be a total of 12 eps so we're getting to the halfway point.
#was wondering whether i should give it a go#appreciate the efforts you put into this!#gonna tune into it this weekend!#the bangkok boy

one of my favorite things abt being on the QL side of tumblr is how different everyone’s taste is. there’s folk who pretty much only watch Japanese bl. There’s ppl who only enjoy super fluffy, happy ending, heart melting romance. There’s buddies of mine who will watch the exact same shows as me and have wildly different opinions on them. Theres ppl who will drop shows halfway while I’m still super on board. There’s shows I really didn’t like that are other peoples’ comfort shows. There are actors I’m not the biggest fan of who people are obsessed with. I love that. I love how different we all are. It shows that there truly is something here for everyone and that there are ppl out there who love the same things you do.
(also this is why I advocate for everyone to try a show/film out for yourself even if someone doesn’t like it. Someone else’s 4 could be your 9.5)

It’s been interesting seeing the GMMTV Problem finally come to a head with Sweet Tooth, Good Dentist. It’s the same problem it’s been for a couple years now: GMMTV is no longer making stories, they are primarily making branded pair content. STGD is not uniquely bad relative to other recent GMMTV BLs, it just doesn’t have a popular branded pair with fans who are willing to pretend it’s good anyway.
