Not only was Will wishing he could be with Mike here, but he was probably also thinking about how, even if he somehow found love, he wouldn’t be able to publicly display affection like that. He looks between Mike and El and stops at their hands before they skate away. He then scans the room to see other couples skating together. Even in some world where Will is loved, he can’t skate with his partner or go on dates in public. He’s thinking about how he can’t have Mike, but that doesn’t matter because what he’s longing for is something he can never achieve with or without Mike.

I came up with this post because of the homophobic comments in Noah's latest post, but I've been thinking this for a while and I wanna hear people's thoughts: is it just me or this year there has been way more homophobia overall than last year? I swear it's growing, even in my country which is one of the most LGBTQ friendly in Europe

me whenever i remember the scene where el pushes max off her skateboard and looks on sadly as mike helps her up:

like damn wtf was that 👀

max could've broken an arm so easily, or hurt her back, a leg, her neck, gotten a concussion

and idk!!! mike suspected it was el but he's not sure. for a moment there was relief that maybe el's here, maybe she's alive, but but but... she did that. she hurt someone bc they were smiling at mike, and making mike smile.

i get so grossed out by milkvans thinking this was romantic. and i'm so ready for el's s5 arc of exploring her anger responses and learning how to deal with that feeling without violence.

Everytime I remember that the three memories associated with getting Will out of his Vecna trance have been ruined, I lose it a little.

His birthday? Either everyone forgot or its been affected by the weird Upside Down time stuff, because there’s way too many references to birthdays, forgotten birthdays, or forgetting in general this season, along with them showing a birthday party at Rink o Mania and pointedly telling us the exact date. Not to mention the writers tweeting a joke about forgetting Will’s birthday while they were writing the season four scripts.

Castle Byers? Not only was it destroyed in the Upside Down leading to Will being taken to the library and dying, but the last time Will was at the real one, he was taking a bat to it after the rain fight.

Meeting Will on the swings being the best thing Mike has ever done? While we know Mike was bullshitting, all Will heard was Mike telling El, “I feel like my life started that day I met you in the woods.”

Even Will’s favorite song is now technically associated with his time singing it repeatedly to himself in the Upside Down. —> “What if, by listening to it over and over, I get sick of it, and suddenly it's not my favorite song anymore? Will it still work?”

Dustin thinking Mike and Lucas are best friends because they live next door is the equivalent of Lucas thinking Mike has a crush on El because she's living in his basement. Like...lads.

They say the Elmike reunion was romantic, still these two scenes are almost exactly the same.

They both have been separated for an entire season, both never gave up the hope that they’d find the other one again. The reunion between Hopper and El was even more intimate tbh, because they were alone while Elmike was around everyone else.

PLATONIC reunions.

lol imagine there’s two wills, like he separated part of himself subconsciously when he was being targeted by the demo/possibly vecna,, like he’s to being able to alter reality (similar to kali) n hide himself n even trick his own brain that no1 has found him in like hide n seek for example. but when he separated himself the ‘real’ him was taken whilst his ‘other’ remained n that’s why he was able to call n appear to joyce because he was there, but also why he was able to last so long because he’s separated his (forgot the word ngl) like brain (y’know the one) from his body, like he’s now ‘braindead’ in a way but he can return (like we say when hop saves him n he wakes up at the hospital).

i would imagine his ‘other’ probs get stuck between the UD n the ‘real’ world so it is why we see him open a sorta-gate n this would also explain the many sort random things that change throughout s1 in wills (n kinda hops) perspective (some1 spoke abt this a while while back can’t remember who or where the post is tho sorry 😕)

when it comes to el speaking to will in s1, i wouldn’t find it hard to imagine that the ‘other’ will subconsciously presented that to el so she would know he’s alive because maybe at that time he was already ‘incubated’ (is that the right word 😭)

it could also link with the rest of the seasons, especially season 2, wills ‘other’ was never truly returned n that’s why he is kind of ‘stuck in between’ or idk something

none of this rlly makes sense, i honestly just find it quite cool, n obvs this could also work with like the whole time stuff n also like (im p sure there’s a theory out there of this >) will having DID

S4E09

If Mike had the same focus on his mental health as part of his character arc in season 4 like Max did, he wouldn’t be as a disliked character by the general audience as he currently is.

I’m being serious.

Their behaviors throughout season 4 are similar enough to draw parallels between them.

They both treat Lucas like crap in less than ideal terms.

They both get their declining academic performance pointed out by another character.

They are both hiding things from people, and being open and honest about it could help them but they won’t do it.

They both mistreat and push away someone they love.

They both lack self-preservation, which leads them to have suicidal tendencies and put their lives at risk.

The show even makes a point of putting Mike next to Max in two of the symptoms mentioned in the Vecna’s curse.

The only difference is that Max’s character has a huge focus this season, and most of it is centers on her deteriorating mental state. On the other hand, the only time Mike gets a chance to explicitly and verbally acknowledge that he is struggling with something, he admonishes himself for caring about something so irrelevant considering the ongoing situation, and the scene shifts to be about Will and his disguised confession through the painting.

So, with all being said... what could this possibly mean for Mike in season 5? Well, Ms. Kelly said it best:

i love el to the bottom of my heart but i feel like we've gotta acknowledge that el is not a sweet harmless cupcake??? that's will byers tbh

el is violent, dangerous, and reactive. and it's obviously for good reasons - she was taught that and has literally zero social skills. she doesn't want to hurt others needlessly, as seen when she refuses to kill a cat. but her reaction to bullying is literally wanting to actually kill angela. if she had had her powers, tell me she wouldn't have snapped her neck! like, yes, angela was awful to her, but when other characters (the party in s1-2) are bullied they aren't trying to smash their heads in as a reaction.

el, even as we left her in s4, truly only knows how to solve problems with violence. she doesn't currently have the interpersonal skills to navigate intimate relationships or difficult situations like bullying. if it's not a villain that can be slain she doesn't know how to proceed.

this is why i really don't think el's character arc can be that she kills vecna and saves the day yet again. she started her character arc with solo violence, and i really don't think she'll end it that way. she doesn't want to be a superhero; she wants support and meaningful relationships.

i really think vecna's defeat will wrap up el's arc by having her need to work with other people in a harmonious way - something that el currently has no idea how to do.
