"you don't owe anyone anything" You are a tar pit. Speak for yourself. I personally owe the cafe employees my dishes put away and my friends a listening ear and small scared insects a cup and a gentle trip outside. Hyperindividualism is a rancid infection borne of capitalism and willfully misinterpreted therapyspeak and I will defy it by continuing to be kind regardless of whether or not it benefits me personally

Imagine you’re 16 years old and a group of unspeakably cruel people (who happen to also be 16) nearly kills your best friend, your only friend, the only person you love, so you decide to throw your own life away and avenge him, beating those responsible until you can’t bear it anymore, and then you drag yourself back to your best friend’s bedside, covered in the blood of his assailants, your future thoroughly destroyed by your own swollen hands, and you fall asleep and you dream of him smiling at you, bathed in golden light, and you tell him you’re sorry for everything, and then you wake up and it’s cold and dark again and he is still unconscious and he will not open his eyes again for nearly two years and all you can think is that it’s your fault, it’s your fault, he’s like this because he tried to protect you, because he loved you so much that nothing could stop him, because of you because of you because of you

While I absolutely loved Weak Hero Class 1, the second season is what truly cemented the deep love that Sieun has for Suho. I've seen it said that all of Season 2 is basically a love letter to Suho from Sieun, and I couldn't agree more.
What makes Season 2 so devastating is Sieun's devotion to Suho when Suho is unable to give him anything in return. Throughout the season, we see Sieun visiting him several times at his hospital, sitting outside of his room. Visiting Suho is like a religious experience for Sieun; he feels that he must face the consequences of his actions that led to this - that in his mind, he must repent for the sin of "killing" Suho.
Tumblr media
In other words, Suho is a god-like figure for Sieun in Season 2. He sees Suho everywhere, as if in a trance-like state - in his dreams, and in his newfound friends, from the way they eat to the way they fight. He views Suho as a standard of morality, his mind flashing back to when he told him not to cross the line. Messaging Suho and apologizing to him out loud is akin to confession - a way of coping with his guilt and despair over losing him.
Tumblr media
After waking up from unconsciousness, Sieun's body immediately feels the need to see Suho. "I'm sorry I'm late," he says, as though Suho was expecting him. He doesn't want to disappoint him for not being there that day, and wants to assure Suho that despite everything, he is forever faithful to him.
I could go on and on, but I think this is what makes Season 2 so sad to the point where it's almost unsettling. Suho, in his comatose state, becomes a higher power for Sieun - someone who is incomparable and above all others, someone he looks to when he is weak, when he is stuck in the dark, and when he is lost without hope.

can’t shake the resemblance gotak has to suho. not always and definitely not in every way but it’s there when he came into sieun and juntae’s class to defend them. in the posturing with hyoman. in the attempt at teasing sieun to get a thank you…. his hands in his pocket. his eye contact. his stupid haircut. gotak’s almost identical facade of nonchalant confidence to suho’s…
sieun and gotak’s conversation in the underpass is like a contorted version of the real ahn suho and a fake guilt-made one that’s sieun’s conjured up. gotak’s telling him he killed suho or ruined his life or done something unforgivable, crossed the almost tangible line they built. and suddenly it’s not gotak talking but suho back from the grave. back from the coma. back from sieuns dim-lit doorstep. and he’s telling him how it really is, the real reason the real suho isn’t here. why sieun’s still alone.
it snaps back into reality and then it’s gotak hitting sieun. sieun hitting gotak. and who can remember who’s who, who’s dreamt up and who’s real. but it’s somehow still clear and bright because even a guilt-made figment of suho wouldn’t hit sieun. so it’s just gotak and guilt and sieun’s still alone. that’s still true

i’m seeing a lot of “suho haunts the narrative” talk from the whc enjoyers, but i think beomseok haunts the narrative more than suho. “haunting the narrative” is specifically about the resounding effects of a character’s action without their presence in the narrative.
although suho’s relationship and care for sieun in more profound than beomseok’s relationship to sieun (because it’s sieun’s first true friendship), the way beomseok’s inferiority complex manifested in the breakdown of their friendship poisoned the way sieun views friendship and himself permanently.
even though beomseok’s arc ends in season 1, sieun seeing beomseok’s actions and insecurities in everything he interacts with at eunjang. suho’s coma is the most potent and physical reminder of the fallout of the trio’s friendship; specifically how both beomseok’s insecurity complex and sieun’s inability to act mix to form sieun’s eventual fighting philosophy.
at eunjang, sieun sees the trio and beomseok in everything, including the new group of friends he meets, more specifically in juntae. juntae is beomseok’s narrative foil, who presents himself shy, weak, and often cowardly, but doesn’t have an inferiority complex. sieun’s reluctance to engage with the new group springs directly from beomseok’s actions, and the thought that every group will end the same as the trio did. sieun’s involvement and subsequent aggressive fighting style in season two is because of the mental cage beomseok’s actions formed in him.
i’ve seen many people mention that they should have shown suho’s body laying in the ring during the “flashback” / dream sequence. however, i think his absence makes the scene more potent and cuts down to the idea that beomseok’s actions are permanently weighing on sieun’s mind, at every turn. sieun is trapped in the ring, frozen and looking towards where suho’s body was, with beomseok representing what keeps seiun trapped and reliving in that moment. beomseok’s actions physically impacted suho in the form of a coma, forever frozen in that moment. but for sieun, beomseok emotionally stunted him. the ring acts as a mental cage for sieun, keeping him from creating emotional ties with the people around him.
ultimately, for sieun to break free, he has to leave that ring, and beomseok in the past.

thinking about that final scene in weak hero class 2 again and it’s just... wrecking me. the way suho looks at sieun—so casual, so soft, like no time has passed at all. like they’re just picking up a conversation from yesterday. there’s no anger, no grief in his voice, just quiet warmth as he asks about sieun’s friends. and it’s such a simple question, but it matters. it means something. because suho knows sieun. knows how alone he used to be. how hard it was for him to let people in.
and then sieun—god—he says yes. yes, those are my friends (in his own way, of course). and suho smiles. like really smiles. not because he thinks it’s about him, but because he’s genuinely happy that sieun wasn’t alone while he was unconscious. because the boy he once stood beside, fought beside, nearly died beside, actually found someone else to hold him up when he couldn’t do it anymore. suho missed so much, lost so much—but in that moment, you can see the relief settle in his eyes. like maybe the world didn’t completely fall apart in his absence.
meanwhile sieun is just barely holding it together. his eyes are glassy, lips trembling at the edges, and you know he’s been carrying so much—grief, guilt, rage, loneliness—all of it, knotted up and buried beneath that dead-eyed stare he’s worn all season. and now suho’s awake. suho’s alive. and sieun doesn’t have to hold it all by himself anymore.
and then it happens. he smiles. not the bitter kind. not the tight, polite kind. a real one. full and genuine and so achingly familiar. the same smile he only ever gave suho in class 1—pure and light and a little boyish, like he forgot for a second that the world hurt. and in that one look, you remember exactly who he used to be. who he still is, somewhere under all the blood and bruises and loss.
it’s such a short scene but it says everything. they found each other again. maybe broken. maybe changed. but not beyond reach. never beyond reach.

i wonder sometimes if people understand how much courage it takes artists to share their art. it's you giving your heart to the world and saying 'here, i made this' without knowing if it will be held gently or even held at all. every time you make yourself that vulnerable, you're opening yourself up to potential hurt. and yet artists keep doing it over and over again. because if just one person says 'i see what you made and it means something to me'...that makes it all worth it
