Friendly reminder that Rook is just as protective of Lucanis as he is of Rook

Rook is one of the most subtly funny characters I've had the pleasure of playing.
Hang on, wait a minute, what is that he's doing behind his shield?
Look at this:
This motherfucker flicks off the enemy every time he deflects a ranged attack with his shield
Computer, enhance:
He doesn't do this when wielding his shield normally, only on "return to sender" shield deflections. Absolutely hilarious.

There's just something about Rook and Lucanis reaffirming their support and love for each other throughout the game that makes me so emotional.

Something something cut content and light studies (also Lucanis' nose studies lol)
Got inspired from that lake scene we were robbed of but in my headcanon this is an intimate moment my girl Zena and Lucanis share some time after the final battle. Maybe I'll write something out.
I promise there will be a part two 💜

How's Careterina's relationship with your Rook? Does she approves of Lucanis and Rook relationship?
1 - i've been thinking about drawing this meme for a long time so here it is
2 - tbh im not sure. 🗿 i've thought about this a lot. and he's a crow, a skilled assassin, he's antivan, from treviso and very patriotic, he saved her favorite grandson, helped to stop her not really favorite grandson, he treats her with respect (she's the first talon and he understands it), also teia likes him haha. but he has literally nothing. he smells like a wet dog, wears pants mended a hundred times, eats trash and candles. also they won't be able to make new little dellamortes. could he be the right person for her grandson? but he makes him happy. 👉👈isn't it nice?
3 - happy new year guys!!!

19 hugging them from behind
Rook/Lucanis. Set late Act 2. Rated T.
“What are you doing? It’s two in the morning. Or... what we think is two in the morning.”
Looking up from the counter, Lucanis angles the faintest of rueful smiles in her direction as he informs her, “I am making emergency soup.”
“Emergency soup?” she echoes, drifting across to what serves as their small kitchen. “What makes it different to other soups?”
“This particular soup is to keep chilled so that Harding and Neve can heat it up instead of creating chaos in here when they’re hungry.”
He manages to wait all of five seconds before adding, “Oh, and you.”
Feigning shock, she staggers back a half-step, hand over her heart.
“You wound me.”
It earns her a soft bark of laughter, little more than a sharp exhalation and a certain brightness to his gaze, as he resumes the chopping of vegetables and pretends not to notice when she sneaks her fingers towards the blade that she knows will not hurt her and steals a piece of freshly-sliced carrot.
Turning away, she moves to examine the fire in the hearth while she munches, moments spent coaxing flames back to richer golds and higher leaping, until her footsteps carry her back to his side – an instinctive matter that her heart decides for her.
(Are there other things in this world that are meant to have felt so easy all along? Not full of brittle steel and second guesses?)
She briefly settles a gentle hand in the small of his back before she tucks her arms snugly around his middle and rests her head against his shoulder with a murmured, “Hello.”
The knife stills, and she thinks she catches a glimpse of a smile as he resumes the task that he has set for himself, and it is another simple thing to lean into him and close her eyes, the tension he carries slowly easing as minutes pass, one of his hands occasionally sweeping over one of hers, as if to anchor her there or remind himself that she is no imagining that he has conjured up.
Just how long they stand so, neatly tucked together, she does not know, letting time unspool however it wishes, and it is only when she hears a rueful note of sound escape his lips that she opens her eyes and murmurs a wordless enquiry in response.
“It... might be necessary to go shopping soon,” he utters wryly.
“Why?”
“Otherwise, we may find ourselves in possession of a lot of soup and nothing else.”
Finally taking in the sight of the chopping board and counter anew, she discovers the wooden crate of vegetables empty and its entire contexts cut into cubes and circles and batons; that he has quite contentedly continued without thinking, snug in her embrace, perhaps purely so that they have no reason to step away from one another.
“Well,” she supposes, pressing a kiss just beneath his ear, “there’s always emergency vegetable stew.”
“...Do you think you could manage not to burn that?” accompanies the brush of lips over the back of her hand.
With a small, teasing, smile, she tells him, “Maybe you’ll just have to trust me.”
Quiet, warm and tender.
“I do.”
Thank you for the prompt! ❤️

On my first playthrough, I had the impression that Lucanis must have broken out of his cell himself before we arrived, that the Venatori he fought when we found him were in the process of recapturing him. I was assuming he'd spent most of his time in the Ossuary in one of the standard small windowless cells.
But now that I actually read the map:
The room we found him in is Lucanis's cell. Before you walk through the door to this room, the label on the map is "High Security".
This suggests some horrible new headcanon options for me!
When you first walk into this room, you see the Venatori using blood magic (presumably, or at least magic that glows red) on that central pillar of... ice? crystal? And then you distract them, and Lucanis breaks through the pillar while the Venatori are focusing on you. (And he kills them all using only his bare hands, as if he doesn't have any knives on him - I think the only reason he does have his weapons and armor is for video game practicality reasons, I think this scene was written and animated as if he doesn't have his gear yet.) So... was the ice/crystal something that the Venatori had conjured just now as a way to restrain him while they did whatever they were doing with their blood magic? Or is the ice/crystal a standard feature of his cell?
Assuming he's not usually kept restrained by magical ice/crystals, if he's usually able to move around within this cell behind the locked door, then that conjures up horrible headcanon option number two, because this room is a platform surrounded by a seemingly bottomless chasm. It is very easy to just walk right off the ledge and fall into the chasm and respawn. And Calivan was convinced that Lucanis was a failure and that Zara would never admit it. And Lucanis has been imprisoned for a year with a demon growing inside him like a sharp hooked claw in his gut, and by the time we found him Calivan was keeping him in a cell that has access to a chasm deep enough to kill you... and of all the forms Spite could potentially take, he manifests as wings. In other words, as something that would not let itself be killed by falling.

I know I said I was on a break, but clearly I lie. A pre relationship piece between Lucanis and Rook. You so know this man would read romance novels to Rook whenever he could.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Hold Onto - Lucanis X Rook
------------------------------------------------------------------
The quiet of the Lighthouse was rare, but Rook relished it. Most of the companions had retired to their rooms or drifted to wherever they found peace. She had intended to go for a stroll in the courtyard, maybe scritch Assan behind the ears, but when she walked into the central room—she froze.
Lucanis was there, stretched out in one of the chairs, a book balanced in his hands. She didn’t mean to linger, but the sight of him so relaxed, his brow furrowed in concentration, caught her off guard. It wasn’t until she saw the title that she couldn’t resist herself.
“A romance novel?” she said, her voice laced with teasing amusement.
He looked up, unperturbed, marking his place with a finger. “I enjoy a good story. And romance is… versatile. There's always something worth considering.”
She walked closer, arms crossed, her light brown eyes dancing with mischief. “I thought you’d be reading something darker. Tragedy, maybe. Drama. But romance? What’s next? Poetry?”
“Don’t tempt me,” he said dryly, though the faintest smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth. “Besides, this is a classic.”
Rook tilted her head, trying to glimpse the title again, but Lucanis lifted the book higher, out of her line of sight. “Oh no, you’re not getting away with that. What’s it about?”
“It’s about love,” he replied simply, his tone frustratingly unreadable.
She rolled her eyes and sank into the chair opposite him. “I figured that much, you cryptic bastard. But what kind of love? Is it sweeping and grand? Tragic and unfulfilled? Come on, give me something.”
Lucanis studied her momentarily, clearly debating whether to indulge her curiosity. With a quiet sigh, he glanced at the page, then read aloud, his voice low and steady:
“In her eyes, he saw everything he’d lost, everything he feared to want again. And yet, against reason, against the endless war in his own heart, he found himself reaching out—not to hold her, but to anchor himself in the storm she had become. For even the fiercest of storms can bring life, can promise something new.”
Rook blinked, her teasing smile softening. For a moment, she forgot to respond, caught in the unexpected tenderness of his words. “That’s… beautiful,” she said quietly.
Lucanis shrugged, but there was a rare warmth in his expression, his eyes never leaving the page. “It’s the way it’s written. Something about it stays with you.”
Rook leaned forward, her elbows resting on her knees. “You like stories that make you feel something, don’t you?”
“And you don’t?” he countered, raising an eyebrow.
“Oh, I do. But I lean more toward epics—heroic sagas, impossible odds, and a little bit of heartbreak. There’s something satisfying about seeing the underdog rise.”
“Predictable,” he teased, closing the book with a quiet snap. “The scrappy rogue loves the hero who fights against the impossible.”
“And the Antivan assassin loves the storm that promises something new?” she shot back, smirking.
Lucanis didn’t respond right away; instead, he set the book aside and met her gaze with that unreadable intensity she was beginning to know well. “We all want something to hold onto, Rook. Even in stories.”
She swallowed, suddenly feeling the weight of his words. The room was quiet again, save for the distant hum of the Fade beyond their sanctuary.
After a moment, she spoke, her voice softer now. “You’ll have to lend me that book when you’re done.”
Lucanis’s smirk returned, faint but unmistakable. “Finish your epic first. Then we’ll see.”
Rook laughed quietly, shaking her head, but there was a warmth in her chest that lingered long after the moment passed. For someone so guarded, Lucanis had a way of letting his walls slip in the most unexpected ways—and she found herself wanting to know every story that resonated with him, one passage at a time.
