!!! THIS IS A DOCTOR WHO: SPARE PARTS APPRECIATION POST !!!

I just listened to this again for the first time in a few years and CAN WE JUST TALK ABOUT HOW TIGHT THIS WRITING IS? Like there is not one single extraneous or uninteresting character in this. The Hartleys are a wonderfully charming family representing the average people of Mondas, Thomas Dodd is a creep profiting off the Mondan people's suffering, Sisterman Constant is an unnerving agent of state propaganda and control, Doctorman Allan is an overworked nihilist who is expected to save her entire species from extinction and by the end she just can't be fucking bothered anymore. Every single character plays a part in illustrating just what an absolute fucking nightmare hellscape this planet has become since being kicked out of orbit.

It's so cool too because like, in a typical "Genesis of the Cybermen" story you might expect there to be a Davros equivalent, and Spare Parts technically has one, but also not really. Doctorman Allan doesn't want to destroy everyone who isn't Mondan, she doesn't want to Crush the Lesser Races (tm) she just wants everyone to continue being alive. She's consistently against the Committee's plans, and she calls the whole graverobbing operation disgusting. She's just trying to make the best of a terrible situation, but happens to make the worst decisions at every turn due to her lack of foresight regarding the sheer scale of what her work would lead to. It's tragic. And that's the real driving feeling throughout the audio drama, it's just unending tragedy.

Like, SPOILERS, there's that scene where Yvonne returns home after being converted into a Cyberman, and she just says "Dad," that scene just breaks my heart every time. And AS IF THAT'S NOT ENOUGH, they twist the knife by having her dad and and brother trying to comfort her despite the horror of the situation. They just show her the holiday tree, and talk about what all the decorations mean, and OF COURSE it all relates to their planet being a rogue hellscape without a sun, and they just sit there around the Christmas tree crying together and I CANNOT TAKE IT.

Like HOLY FUCKING GOD, THIS THING IS GOOD. Doccy Who is usually pretty light, and it's all about adventure and saving lives, and then there's this tragic story about an apocalypse that the Doctor and Nyssa can't hope to solve and it is INCREDIBLE.

Also how often are the Cybermen going to be augmented with Time Lord biology, this is getting ridiculous.
