Shinichi really gets influenced really easily by other people's words when they reach his need to protect someone. It's been shown many times that he can't keep his cool when someone he loves might be in danger and can't think straight.

Also, he has been shown many times how much he hates seeing Ran cry and being sad. Haibara pushed on those feelings when talking about how Ran can't know, "If she knows she'll only suffer for you," she says. Shinichi took that to heart, because he knows that Ran is like that. If he tells her, she will make that pain hers. And, once again, Haibara showed how people around them can be in danger if they know. That's enough for making Shinichi have a one track mind.

If they say that knowing will put her in danger, that's all he will focus on without thinking of the fact that not knowing will also put her in danger. That both knowing and not knowing will put her in danger no matter what, it's a double edged sword. But, he can't think that, by thinking that Ran not knowing will make her safer, he can delude himself into having control over a situation he absolutely has no control over. Maybe he can protect her better if she doesn't know.

Ran knowing is a wild card that no one knows how it will go like. In the end, Ran can become more reckless, given her sense of justice and need to help other people. She's impulsive with that, just like Shinichi, so that can be dangerous, and he can't bear to think that

It's because he's 200% attractive. Yee there's a lot of attractive male characters in the series but for me Shinichi is the most attractive out of allll of them

This quality however can't be utilised too much into the world as it is dangerous. That's why Gin and Vodka decided to poison him in the first place; his attractiveness is dangerous to other people, yep

can i genuinely ask, as someone who is a non-shipper, what the big deal with the gojohime ship is, why does everyone act like gojohime killed their parents?? the discourse has been all over twitter these past few days. if a ship is legal then go for it, these two are legal adults so what’s the big deal. also, since when did ships have to even make sense? i’ve seen people ship characters that have had one interaction, no interactions, hate each other/are mortal enemies, one of the characters might even be in a relationship with someone else, i’ve even seen people ship characters from two completely different series…like calm down. i thought people shipped for fun, why are you so pissed that someone ships something different, in a manga that has little to do with romance? “gojohime shippers mischaracterise her”, please, whenever i click on someone’s account that says this i always see a certain mlm pairing in the jjk fandom (im sure you know who) that are getting mischaracterised to oblivion. anyone in fandom knows one thing and that’s “Ship and let ship” it’s so easy to block/mute accounts or tags if you don’t want to see them, for your own sanity just do it because the amount of agitation i see people have because of a fictional ship consisting of a bunch of lines on paper is concerning. “it’s misogynistic to ship them” and calling actual real live breathing women “delusional bitches” or to “stfu” even to the point of wishes of sexual harm or wishes of death because of a ship is not misogynistic? grow up. no, just because someone ships them doesn’t mean they are “homophobic” either, in fact many of them ship other pairings as well that consists of m/m or f/f or are even queer themselves. please put all this energy into calling out fans that actually ARE homophobic.

also i just want to end this by saying there is officially 1 canon pairing in the series (it isn’t even really since Akutami never continued the relationship in the manga) confirmed by Akutami himself and that’s Miwa and Mechamaru (Source: Akutami’s Mando Kobayashi 2021 Interview), those two are the only ones he sees romance between in the series. no ship is more canon than any other ship and that’s that, leave people to ship what they want and stop crying when someone has a ship differing from yours.

It’s incredibly important to me that the anime decided to include this scene that wasn’t in the manga. In the manga, Maomao does pass out in Jinshi’s lap after saving him from what was obviously an assassination attempt.

HOWEVER, the manga cuts off at this point, keeping strictly in Maomao’s perspective, and cuts straight to when she regains consciousness in bed after being treated for her injuries. The manga doesn’t show how she got back. They SAY how, and she briefly mentions, “wow that must have been embarrassing; he carried me back,” but we don’t SEE it. We don’t get to feel the true impact of what that means. But the anime DID show us, and holy shit.

They SHOW us how taboo this is. They show Jinshi carrying her out of the temple, after a public attempt on his life.

They show us the shock and horror on Lakan’s face as Jinshi silently walks past him. Horror at the state his daughter is in, horror at another man—a man with a status he could never dare to question—staking such a public claim over his child, horror at the fact that he could never have this level of closeness with her (as Maomao would never allow it).

Everyone hides their gazes, as is their custom when someone of his rank passes by, but the air is different this time. Jinshi is furious, he’s terrified, and he could not give a single shit about how inappropriate it looks to these palace officials.

The shot that slowly follows her trail of blood—even though it’s a small detail—that in particular leaves such a intense impression of how poignant this is for him.

Maomao talked about this scene in the manga like it was nothing to her. She did what she set out to do: she saved the person who was targeted by the attack. She didn’t even know the target would be someone she knew. But she has no idea that this happened afterwards as a result of her bravery. To her, it likely wasn’t even an act of bravery at all. She acted on impulse; she did what she knew was the right thing to do.

The anime didn’t need to include this, because the manga didn’t show it. But damn, I’m so glad they did.

i think, in total there are two significant shinran moments worth talking about

i enjoy certain elements of the first scene:

ran impulsively goes after a member of the black organization and puts herself in danger because he poses a threat to haibara. their fight is AMAZING, i love how ran dominates pinga despite him attacking her with a knife

something similar happens in the manga as well (chapter 434), so the writing for ran absolutely tracks here

chianti sees the fight and interferes by attempting to shoot ran - shinichi barely manages to save her in time

here's the thing: i absolutely hate the writers for often reducing ran to a damsel in distress in these movies, that's an issue i'll further analyze in a bit

with that being said, i don't mind shinichi saving ran in this scene. it's an impactful shinran moment, cause so far the writing is similar to the manga

the only difference between chapter 434 and this movie is the fact that shinichi actually sees what's happening and is able to actively protect ran. i don't have a problem with that, because that's what shinichi and ran do - they protect each other.

what i love even more is how shinichi decidedly urges ran to stay put, i think that's also very in character for him:

he wants ran nowhere near the black organization, for very specific reasons that i'll get into another post

so far, this is a well executed scene, right? it's a very realistic, high-stakes moment that we'd expect from the manga. so far, so good, right? RIGHT?!

no. cause this is where the movie writers fuck up:

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?! SHE ACTUALLY STAYS?! AND WHEN SHIN TELLS HER TO RUN, SHE RUNS?! WHAT?!

this is is supposed be ran??? no fucking way.

my girl is the definition of reckless and stubborn. she's not just the type of person who'll enter a burning house to save a girl she barely knows (chapter 174), she's also the type of person who refuses to waste a single second when human lives are at stake. no matter how much shinichi begs her to stay away.

chapter 640

and she does this in chapter 822 on the mystery train as well: shinichi yells at the detective boys, sonoko and ran, he tells them not to leave their room, no matter what. and ran repeatedly attempts to go against his instructions because she's worried about haibara, despite receiving a text message that she's okay, btw. ran's intuition tells her that something is wrong with haibara, so she's gonna fucking look for haibara!!!

i need the movie writers to understand that my girl is absolutely unhinged. she cares about other people very deeply, to the point where she's incapable of watching from the sidelines as they potentially get hurt

so how would i have written this moment? what would've been a more realistic version of this scene?

shinichi and ran get into an intense fight: shin desperately urges ran to stay put, she refuses to listen. and then there'd be two possible outcomes:

a) ran continues to go after pingo and dies in the process (remember, ran was fully prepared to die for haibara in chapter 434)

b) shinichi realizes that he can't stop ran and offers her a safer way to help. ran accepts and they work together as a team to get haibara back

why didn't the movie writers go for this approach? my theory: they don't want ran to take a bigger role in these movies, so option b) was a no-go for them. obviously it'd make even less sense for them to kill off ran, but like i already explained, there's no way ran would just give up on haibara in that moment

so why include this moment at all? what's the point of starting such a strong scene if you're not gonna progress the plot?

the point is ran being a damsel in distress.

which brings me to the second shinran moment in this movie:

ran goes after pinga again and he kicks her off the balcony, she's about to fall and get hurt

kuroda ends up saving her and shinichi feels inadequate

..............

AGAIN, THERE'S NO PLOT PROGRESSION, THE ONLY POINT OF THIS SCENE IS TO MAKE HER LOOK WEAK

idk who this woman is but this ain't ran

a woman who's consistently depicted as strong, fierce and very capable of protecting herself:

and that's not to say that shinichi doesn't worry about her sometimes, ofc he does:

and it's not just that she's capable of protecting herself, she protects shinichi too.

it's like the movie writers read the manga, took note of moments where shinichi comes through for ran but completely forgot that it's mutual, they come through for each other:

the movie staff doesn't get ran, they seem to have no idea how strong or caring she is and i hate how much it's hurting the fandom's perception of her

When I say that my favourite atla ship is Zutara people assume that I dislike Aang. But that couldn't more further than truth. I love all the kids in team avatar.

I really like Aang, I just don't find his relationship with Katara romantically interesting and therefore I don't ship them.
