Back in 2013, I posted a Welcome to Night Vale fic and someone commented, “I’m autistic and I see myself a lot in the way you write Carlos. Did you intend for him to autistic?”
And I was like “I’m flattered you think so! No, he’s not intended to be autistic, but I’m glad you can see yourself in him.”
Now twelve years later I spent some time this evening trying to track down that comment to give a very belated clarification. Whoever you were stranger, hey. I only said no because I based Carlos heavily on me, and since I wasn’t autistic, Carlos wouldn’t be either. Well. I’ve learned some stuff in the intervening decade that strongly support your literary analysis.

all articles about tumblr’s “decline” boil down to 2 things: you can’t get famous on here and you can’t make money on here. And they don’t get that that’s why we like it here.

my family wasn't this strict, but in some sects of buddhism you're not allowed to eat the "five pungent vegetables", onions garlic shallots leeks and umm chives i think, really any of those kind of vegetables. probably some monk ages ago was tired of onion farts stinking up the temple. anyways, one time my brother made a soup using all five of them. he said, "one sip of this, and you'll be reincarnated as a flea."

its easy to be cynical about the future but on the bright side at least more people keep giant skeleton statues in their yards now moreso than ever before

I feel like the over-saturation of irony on the internet resulted in an entire cultural zeitgeist of never being passionate about taking anything seriously for fear of being perceived as "cringe", and this is why we have all these weirdos running around parroting neo-conservative bullshit and if you ever challenge them on it, they make it their life's mission to goad you into an emotional response, then act like you've lost the argument because "lol facts don't care about your feelings" despite their entire argument being fallacious in both concept and execution.
Someone once said to me "the worst thing you can be on the internet is cringe". At the time I didn't understand it but seeing the rise of post-ironic apathy driven by fear of being made fun of on the internet, I do now.

Listen I'm here to recruit any and everyone into the bread cult. Please let me know how your starters and loaves go! I'd love to see the progress! Tag me in all the bread.
Also if you have a bread machine, there are recipes out there for making sourdough loaves in there. Most of them won't be quite as sour as your handmade loaves unless your machine has a specific sourdough function (I think. Mine does have a sourdough function but I haven't tried it yet because I just got this machine 2 days ago)
If you wanna give bread machines a go, you can pick up a perfectly serviceable one from any thrift store pretty cheaply. Even a 30 year old machine will make tasty bread. Here is a good resource on picking a good thrifted bread machine. It's best to do that first before buying a brand new one, so you can get an idea of what features and stuff you'd like.
Feeling a little jealous of the unadulterated joy the sourdough girlies have got going on. Might have to get into that ish.
……….
(2) questions though:
how the ✨fuck✨ do you make a sourdough starter? (does not make sense)
And a really sour loaf of bread? Bc a lot of loaves I’ve bought just are one degree away from normal bread.

There's nothing I love more than being surrounded by those I hold dearest in the light of a single candle, the faces gazing at me from across the altar, the smell of incense in the air.
