The   soldier   had   always   been   something   of   a    CURIOUS   MYSTERY    to   her.    Natalia   had   been   the   dutiful   recruit   ,   ┈┈   performing   well   above   the   rest   of   her   class   in   every   aspect.    She   was   everything   the   Red   Room   wanted   out   of   their   assassins   ,            (   and   he   was   HYDRA's   prized   asset.   )    The   confusion   hadn't   come   from   them   choosing   her   to   train   with   him   ,   ┈┈   the   mystery   and   confusion   was   always   solely   behind   his   eyes.

There   was    PAIN    there.    Pain   that   didn't   seem   to   have   a   cause   ,   ┈┈   but   still   somehow   felt   so   real   she   could   see   it   in   those   icy   blue   eyes.    No   matter   how   piercing   they   had   come   to   be   with   the   years   he   had   been   in   the   field.            (   a   true   ghost   story   in   more   ways   than   one.    haunting   in   those   hues.   )    Somehow   both   heartbreaking   ,   but   also    FASCINATING.   Every   attempt   to   learn   more   ,   met   with   something   in   between   denial   and   …   SOMETHING   ELSE    she   couldn't   quite   place.

He   spoke   ,   and   she   listened.    Most   of   the   time   ,   ┈┈   their   training   was   void   of   words   save   for   the   occasional   correction   when   he   found   a   flaw.    Head   tilts   ,   hearing   those   words   and   wondering   who   they   belonged   to   …   Him   or   the   ones   who   held   their   leashes.    Emerald   eyes   narrow   ,   watching   his   moves   before   ducking   to   evade   him   ,   ┈┈   moving   around   him   in   almost   a   dance   like   state.    Until   she   found   herself   behind   him.    Arms   raised   in   her   fighting   stance.    ❝   Because   of   who   might   find   out   ,   or   something   you   can't   answer.   ❞    She   waits   ,   only   long   enough   for   him   to   turn   before   throwing   a   kick   to   knock   his   legs   out   from   under   him.    Confidence   ruling   over   her   movements.

The   silence   between   them   crackled   with   more   tension   than   the   clash   of   fists   ever   could.   He   stood   across   from   her   on   the   mats,   fists   still   half-raised,   breath   low   and   controlled.   The   Red   Room   training   hall   was   cold   and   unyielding—just   like   it   used   to   be—but   her   voice   cut   through   it   like   a   scalpel.   His   jaw   tightened,   the   ghost   of   an   old   memory   flaring   behind   his   eyes—hands   stained,   missions   completed,   names   forgotten.   But   Natasha   wasn’t   just   another   recruit.   She   never   had   been.

He   looked   at   her   then,   not   just   as   a   partner   or   an   opponent,   but   as   the   woman   who   saw   too   much   and   still   didn’t   flinch.   “I’m   not   afraid   of   hurting   you,”   he   said   finally,   voice   rough   like   gravel   dragged   over   steel.   “I’m   afraid   of   what   I   remember   when   I   stop   holding   back.   What   I   become.”   He   met   her   gaze   and   something   in   him   shifted—not   quite   surrender,   not   quite   control,   but   the   line   he   walked   every   day   since   they   took   the   trigger   words   out   of   his   head.

He   raised   his   hands   again,   this   time   not   holding   back.   Not   entirely.   If   she   wanted   the   truth   of   him,   then   he   would   give   her   just   enough   of   it.   Enough   to   show   her   what   the   Winter   Soldier   never   got   the   chance   to   regret.   "You   should   not   ask   questions."   Because   they   could   be   watching,   because   this   could   be   a   test   (how   can   it   not   be?   are   they   letting   the   reins   of   his   brain   loose?   why?   ).
