My personal opinion is that you probably shouldn’t ask a linguist how to learn a language because a linguist is the sort of person who likes studying esoteric grammar points

hi <3 do you have any recs for movies in welsh? im duolingo-ing rn (until i find a suitable alternative because ewww ai) but im a context-learner so visual context would help (<hence why audiobooks Are good but not As good as movies)
diolch for what you're doing yma btw it's really cool languages are awesome
To be perfectly honest, there aren't a lot of Welsh-language films knocking about, and I've only personally watched a tiny handful of them. Terrible patriot, me.
The ones I've watched:
Hedd Wyn (1992) — A biopic about Ellis Evans, a pacifist poet who was conscripted into the First World War. I'm sure it's a good film as it won several awards and was even nominated for an Academy Award, but I watched it as a teen and couldn't take it seriously due to the male lead being played by my friend's dad. I will attempt to watch it again one day, especially as it's been archived and is available to watch online!
Tylluan Wen (1997) — An adaptation of a novel that was part of the Welsh GCSE curriculum until a couple of years ago. This is really not a good film at all, and I'm not just saying that as someone who was forced to watch it roughly 671 times as a teenager, but you might get some enjoyment out of it if you enjoy gravity-defying harps, awful acting and the meme blog I made fifteen years ago about it. I've not been able to find a subtitled version of the film, but here it is in all its infamous glory on YouTube!
Ibiza, Ibiza (1986) — Comedy film following a group of Welsh people on holiday in - wait for it - Ibiza. I haven't watched it since I was very young so I don't know how well it's aged, but it's a good one to watch if you want to hear a range of accents, and it's currently streaming on iPlayer!
Y Dywysoges a'r Bwgan (1991) — Animated fantasy film produced in collaboration by Wales and Hungary. It's recently been revived and is currently touring cinemas in Wales as part of CAF On Tour, which is extremely cool! It's also on YouTube, but without any subtitles.
Films I haven't seen but are probably worth watching:
Y Sŵn (2023) — Period drama following the events that led to the creation of the S4C, Wales's first - and only - Welsh-language television channel. Been on my watch list for a while, and it's currently streaming on iPlayer anc S4C Clic.
Y Wledd (2021) — Welsh-language folk horror set in Snowdonia. I know nothing more than that, but I've heard it was well-received at a few film festivals and it should be available to rent online. Again, one to add to my watch list!
As a whole, we tend to have better TV series than films — most likely for budget reasons than anything else! Here are the ones I'd recommend:
Y Gwyll (otherwise known as Hinterland, filmed in both Welsh and English and broadcast on S4C and the BBC respectively)
Un Bore Mercher (otherwise known as Keeping Faith, and filmed and broadcast as above)
Dal y Mellt (otherwise known as Rough Cut, same as above but broadcast on Netflix)
Y Golau (otherwise known as The Light in the Hall, same as above but broadcast on Channel 4)
Bang (bilingual, pretty sure it's available on both S4C and BBC)
They're pretty much all crime thrillers, but that's apparently what we do best! We loves a crime in Wales, we do.
