THEY CHOSE TO BE A PRODUCTION COMPANY
shane could've done puppet history with amazon puppets, a cardboard stage and two friends on his apartment on a personal channel, but they wanted to build a business! they have production studio on their youtube bio.
i hate capitalism as much as the next person but if you want to enter the game, art or talent won't save you. even smosh, the silly sketches channel, has a ceo with business experience.
i understand the sentiment and think a lot of artist are going through this, but this doesn't apply to watcher.
It really sucks that creative people are now also expected become their own marketing team or become experts in business ventures in order to keep making art. Literally cannot think of a group of people less inclined to tedious number punching work than passionate artists.

my final two cents on the watcher thing if anyone cares lol:
the apology was great, but this still fundamentally changed the way watcher will interact with their public. the uwu ghoul boys will probably do their best to stop this parasocial relationship and go behind the scenes after their fans were racist to their best friend for $6.
but all of this could've been avoided if they did a video that went in depth into watcher.tv instead of banking on sad piano music and parasociality.
i won't follow them anymore besides checking for puppet history every now and them, mainly bc this made me realize i watched a lot of shows out of loyalty or nostalgia. i hope the watcher boys do their thing and stay healthy and happy after seeing some fans' true colors, but i don't care anymore.
i think that's the weirdest thing out of all of this: that even when a company apologizes for a fuck up, the existence of a ""controversy"" rattled their fans enough that the spell is broken and they realize they didn't even care that much.
i guess my emotional support youtube company is drawfee now.

This whole Watcher thing does not affect me emotionally in the slightest so here’s my advice to people who are hurting
When a piece of media that you have been using as a happy place betrays you you have to accept the anger. I’m not someone who enjoys being angry (it depresses me) but the best way to get through this is to accept the legitimacy what you’re feeling and let yourself feel it in order to move past it. They did betray you and they weren’t what you thought they were. There’s nothing you can do about that. There’s no way that you as an individual can hurt them the way they hurt you and trying to do so will make you feel worse. Screaming into the void on tumblr or one on one with friends is actually pretty healthy (if you don’t directly address anyone at Watcher).
You’re not wrong for being angry, you’re not wrong for feeling betrayed. Being a fan is a kind of labor. Spending your time watching something and being passionate about something is a work they can’t buy. You advertised for them and they have not respected your labor. This was not content given for free this was content you paid for with your limited human energy and their not respecting that is a them problem. They don’t deserve you and much sooner than you think this will stop hurting and you’ll find new passions.
Be angry. Move past it. Be free.
TLDR version: Your anger and your feelings of betrayal are legitimate. Don’t feel guilty for feeling what you’re feeling. We often think Of parasocial relationships as a weakness of character but all small content creators actively work to foster parasocial dynamics. That’s how they get you to care so much. It’s okay to be angry and to be sad. You aren’t a bad person or weak person for feeling a connection with a brand that actively wanted you to feel connected to them.

what i don't get also is what kind of restrictions do their sponsors put on them? cause apparently they've had enough of dancing to the tune of their sponsors but i would love to know just how much control they have over what they can make and what they can't. cause to me it just sounds like they're sick of doing 5 minute ad reads

Was reading comments on instagram. And the stark difference between the comments under Steven’s and Shane and Ryan’s posts is crazy. The way people are putting ALL the blame on Steven and babying Ryan and Shane is mindblowing. They might not be the CEOs but they are cofounders of the company. Ain’t no way they didn’t have ANY say in the matter and it’s 100% Steven’s decision.
“Is Steven holding you guys hostage?” “We will support you if you(Ryan) and Shane go off and do something of your own” “this isn’t you” etc
At the end of the day Shane and Ryan are strangers to us, what we see and know about them is what they want us to see. Get a grip and realise that, thanks.

Look, I know it’s easy to sit back and judge others’ decisions after they’ve already had a bad reaction and hindsight is 20/20 and all that, but everything about this whole Watcher debacle was a horrible business decision. I can’t believe 25 people sat in their office and said “yeah this is perfect and won’t severely impact our viewership”. Absolute clownery.

only thing i want to personally add to the whole watcher debacle is i’ve seen a lot of people say that the announcement video reeks of “we’re better than youtube” and while i agree, this is absolutely not a new sentiment from watcher.
i distinctly remember when watcher first started, and especially with ghost files, ryan’s biggest pitch was that he wanted to make high quality content like what you’d find on tv. that he’d always wanted to be a director, and as someone with a similar dream at the time all i could think was “and you’re gonna do that through,,,, ghost files?”
and then when puppet history started airing and shane was talking about his excitement for it he said something very similar. about always wanting to make content where he can really “go nuts with it”
it felt weird, like something about those sentiments wasn’t quite right, but i pushed it away. i had a similar dream to ryan and figured that watcher on youtube and ghost files would be a good way for him to establish a presence that tv stations might pick up. and the same for shane and puppet history and potentially getting a kids tv show out of it or something similar. i don’t know much about steven’s goals, but i had always assumed watcher would be temporary and that eventually they would get their own shows on already established networks. like they just viewed youtube as a stepping stone that they would quickly pull away from.
and then it kept going. and going. and suddenly productions values were going up and new shows were being pitched and tons of new employees were hired and the idea that watcher was temporary very much faded. but the attitude never did. they kept adding more but it never felt like they were establishing this brand as anything long term like gmm or smosh.
and even as the shows felt more overproduced it was almost like the quality was declining. puppet history was getting corrected on its facts more and more. ghost files was constantly getting called out for viewer submissions being obviously faked. they’d stayed on their stepping stone too long and it began to crumble.
this is not to defend them in any way, and this is not to shame any fans who feel blind sided. but i am not shocked by this in the slightest. dumbfounded at how awful a decision this is? absolutely. disappointed that they actually committed to it? for sure. but i am not shocked. this company was always on borrowed time, and i can finally let out the breath i’ve been holding since they first announced their own solo channel.

Ok this is genuinely not ok anymore, I understand people are upset but it is NEVER OKAY to bully and harass someone just bc u disagree with a decision they've made.
People have been flooding the comments of Ryan Bergara's wedding photos on Instagram with hate, booing both of them and telling him she's gonna leave him when he goes broke from his stupid business decision. ITS FINE TO NOT LIKE WATCHERTV. ITS FINE TO NOT SUBSCRIBE. but it's not ok to completely dehumanize, other, and harass them. I've seen people telling Shane and Ryan to kill themselves. That is Not Fucking Okay. They are STILL HUMAN BEINGS. NOT UNTOUCHABLE 1 PERCENTERS.
I know cyberbullying and harassment is normal these days but it's not fucking okay. Hate on them all you want, genuinely criticize their decision all you want, but don't go to all their socials and send them that hate. They're human beings with feelings, and you guys need to go touch some fucking grass.
