Today I've heard 3 different things.

"I don't remember this much fuss for other VE days. It feels a bit nationalistic for my liking" - They are incorrect, in 2005 there was a huge fuss made of it (Not near me but there was literal street parties to re-enact the street parties that took place in 1945) , and 10 years ago every community or church hall had VE day events including talks from veterans and historians, and a war time song singalong from actual real celebrities! This year is rather subdued in comparison

"There isn't much on this year, you'd hardly know it was VE day" - There's been news items on every night the past week about VE day and the ceremonies were on virtually every channel this morning. There's art exhibitions on in town. Movie channels have been VE and war time themed. Granted the live re-enaction through town from a few years ago wasn't repeated but it's hardly being ignored.

"VE Day used to be a bank holiday! Why haven't we got the day off for it this year?" VE day has never been a bank holiday. A few years ago the may bank holiday was changed slightly to match up with VE Day and she would have got the day off then, but it's never been it's own bank holiday, that would make 3 bank holidays in may. That's taking a piss a bit.

Well by this afternoon I had the start of the introduction,

And I have typed and deleted a few dozen words since and am now back to the same point of the introduction as I was this afternoon.

My brain this morning as soon as I woke up "Hey do you remember that time you shipped Mal/Simon? What if instead of writing your essay, you just binge read a load of Firefly fic to relive those days?"

I'm in a terrible nostalgic mood tonight so here's 3 bonkers fics that have stayed with me, all of these years.

The sex cult/sex dungeon fic that I didn't even read, my friend did. The way she described the ending - with three faces peering through the very edge of a window - nearly had me fall off my seat on the bus and everytime my brain reminds me of it, I start laughing again.

I had planned not to reveal fandoms and source materials but this one gives it a way by description - Every character of Robert Sean Leonard's ending up coming through some sort of portal to Princeton Plainsboro. It's bonkers in a good way.

The "every seven years, the first years turn out gay". I'm saying no more about it.

Why is the scottish character's family from Ireland and living in Ireland?

Is this artistic licence or does the author not know Ireland is not Scotland and vice versa?

I know this isn't the best topic to talk about right now but I just need to say this.

Back in 2011, I came across a huge rec list of fics for Perciver and I read every. Single. Fic that was available to read on that list.

Some fics have blurred together now but the ones stand out was where Oliver found out Percy was being bullied, more than once terrorised by Marcus Flint, and rallied around him. Sometimes with known characters like the quidditch team and one time with a group of friends made up of OCs, and Percy came out of his shell and came into his own.

Some were short, some were long. Some were really funny. Some were alternatives to book 6 and book 7.

I got into this pairing off the back of a re-read following my Dead Poets Society phase, between hospital stays. I needed home comfort with a slide or survival.

And the author's really delivered. They might have been in rare pair territory but they made their impact.

I mean they brought Percy to life and gave him nuance that at best was there, twinkling into the pages, but mostly not and certainly never pulled into the light because it wasn't his story, it was Harry's. And don't get me started on Oliver Wood.

Those fic authors really gave us something we were missing and like with any fandom, their fics might be gone, the creators behind them been outed as stinking rubbish on fire, but the hard work they put into sharing their hard work, ideas, deserve to be remembered.

It feels like when a good band or a good film turns out to have one really shit "arrested after a multi agency crack down" member and the whole thing is tainted. It doesn't matter the bassist is innocent or some actor with ten minute screen time didn't do anything the wrong, it's all tainted and nobody can be given accolades without it sounding like you support the shit one.
