Murram vs Tarmac Time and again I have discouraged running on tarmac for amateurs. By Amateurs I mean those who don't make money from running. Why murram over Tarmac? (I would ideally be making a lot of money for such consultancy but for purposes of helping the masses, let me deconstruct) Murram is in it's natural form: just soil. In some cases soil that has been compressed Tarmac is a mixture of sand, gravel, concrete, cement and tar Without even having a deep thought, tarmac is ideally a slab. It has so many components making it a hard surface hence greater impact force exerted on the body when running. Did you know when running we exert our weight on each leg at a time? There is no time both legs hit the ground at the same time. Scientific studies have shown that we exert 3times our body weight on each leg when we run. Take for instance you are 80kg. When hitting the ground, you insert 240kg on the ground. Now imagine you are running with ngoma rubber shoes or worn out shoes for an entire 5km!! How many steps will you make? That is why I have frequently written about running with proper shoes that can absorb that pressure and avoiding tarmac. Do you find tarmac softer ground? Why do you think shoe manufacturers are making innovations trying to beat each other on the best shoes? Be your own judge. Google the models Nike or Adidas are making on the thickness of the sole and what goes into the shoes. Avoid Tarmac like plague. You will get overuse injuries in the knee, feet, lower back, hip and IT band. Treating them needs a sports physiotherapy who has handled the same. In the next article I will write about Treadmills.
