I thought Backlash massively overdelivered for what was on paper a pretty nothing show. This is basically the hallmark of what works about the HHH era. You take a show that should be a totally forgettable B PPV, you give everybody time, everybody puts on a good-to-excellent match, everybody is over, I go home happy and pleasantly surprised. I have nothing to complain about.

It's also refreshing that the midcard titles got so prominently featured on a PPV for a change. They often don't get defended on PPVs so that was cool to utilise a B show to give them some spotlight, especially the Women's IC title which stole the show IMHO.

It feels like a return to form and really continues the trend of Backlash every year being a show that feels like it's kind of nothing on paper but winds up being surprisingly great with a super hot crowd

Lyra Valkyria - Backlash 2025

Lyra Valkyria is one of the best wrestlers in all of WWE. No cap, real graps. Every time she wrestles she changes things up to tell the story of the match. She'll do things you've never seen her do before because it's right for the match and do it all seamlessly.

The story here with her and Becky was great. Lyra set out to prove exactly what she told Becky in her promo - that she is a better wrestler than Becky. There was so much spite and a desire to humiliate Becky in a lot of the moves she chose, including stealing some of Becky's moves. And Lyra proved herself right. The story of this match was that Lyra is indeed the better wrestler.

Becky resorted to cheating in every way possible she could think of but all of her efforts to cheat failed (in large part due to Ref Jess catching her multiple times), and Lyra won anyway. This led to the spiteful beatdown after the match. Becky couldn't beat Lyra so she'll destroy her, injure her, force her to vacate the belt, end her career. This sets the stage for a rematch where Lyra is at a huge disadvantage because, even though we know she'd beat Becky at full strength, she has to wrestle her with essentially only one arm.

But yeah, 11/10 match for me between two of my faves - one of my GOATs and a new upcoming fave in Lyra. I was losing my mind at some of those false finishes. Glad it got so much time. The crowd was super into the match and making noise the whole time. A star making performance from Lyra but this feud is not done.
