When a straight man lashes out after dating or having sex with a trans woman, he is often afraid of the implication that his sexuality is joined to hers. When a gay man anxiously keeps trans women out of his activism or social circles, he is often fearful of their common stigma as feminine. And when a non-trans feminist claims she is erased by trans women’s access to a bathroom, she is often afraid that their shared vulnerability as feminized people will be magnified intolerably by trans women’s presence. In each case, trans misogyny displays a fear of interdependence and a refusal of solidarity. It is felt as a fear of proximity. Trans femininity is too sociable, too connected to everyone—too exuberant about stigmatized femininity—and many people fear the excess of trans femininity and sexuality getting too close. But sociability can never be confined or blamed on one person in a relationship; it’s impersonal, and it sticks to everyone. The defensive fear and projection built into trans misogyny, whether genuine or performed, is an attempt to wish away what it nonetheless recognizes: that trans femininity is an integral part of the social fabric. There will be no emancipation for anyone until we embrace trans femininity’s centrality and value.
Jules Gill-Peterson, A Short History of Trans Misogyny

I think one of the big takeaways from having a post abt intracommunity transmisogyny get some notes outside my little bubble of mutuals who understand feminism is that most people on this site? Fundamentally do not grasp how intersections with misogyny function. When trans women talk about trans men having male privilege, we are very importantly not implying here that they are treated perfectly by all of society. As with all groups of oppressed men, many of their privileges are heavily curtailed by wider societal oppression on the basis of transness, or homosexuality, or color, etc etc. What this does not do is cancel out their ability to wield misogyny against those who exist within the same oppressed groups. Black feminists have long discussed how black men are still capable of and actively benefit from misogynoir, even though they are also oppressed by racist society. In the same vein, trans men suffering transphobic oppression does not mean that they cannot and do not benefit from transmisogyny within queer and trans spaces. These are truths that are not actually at odds unless you have a deeply skewed conception of intersectional feminism (which most of these people do).

Palestinian and Black ppl asking white people to be careful about not centering whiteness at Free Palestine/BLM rallies and marches is a sign of respect in my eyes.
I myself can be accused of being infantilizing or even dehumanizing because I trust white folks to not center themselves amongst the “other” as much as I trust a dog with my lunch.
The bending to appeal to the white heart - hair hotcombed and Sunday’s best starched and ironed to attend the Civil Rights marches of the 60’s, kids pleading in English with hopeful eyes and smiles for TikTok today- hasn’t whiteness been accommodated enough yet? Still can’t see the struggle unless it’s Lawrence of Arabia, the last of the Mohicans, or some shit?
White people show photos of themselves at rallies 20-30 years later and it gives them clout in their political careers while every other subject of an iconic photo of a non-white person at these events end up dead under mysterious circumstance, openly assassinated, or spirited away to Guantanamo.
