Apologies for not being able to fulfil my Guest of Honour duty in person. It was the MOU signing of North East Integrated Care Programme (NE ICP) among 13 partners to provide holistic support for students of four schools in Tampines: Tampines Primary, Angsana Primary, Tampines North Primary and Junyuan Primary. The partners include North East CDC, MSF Singapore, SHINE Children & Youth Services, The Singapore Scout Association, Tampines West Community Club Management Committee, Trampolene Limited, Care Corner SG, CARE Singapore, Employment & Employability Institute, e2i, Methodist Welfare Services, Singapore Anglican Community Services, The SBL Vision Family Service Centre, and PA CDC Planning & Development Division (PA CPD). I was doing my usual house visit on Wednesday evening when I sprained my right ankle out of sudden. I didn’t miss a step or trip over something. Could be due to an old injury. I tried cold treatment for a day but it deteriorated today. Decided to go for acupuncture. The sinseh recommended rest and minimal walking/standing. Therefore I had to send apologies for a CDC event tomorrow (will be sending a recorded speech instead) and a branch volunteer induction session (will be joining via Zoom). Luckily my KopiTalk is already via FB Live and I can do it from home. I hope to be well enough to attend the Edusave award ceremony on Sunday. I really would like to present the awards to our deserving students in person but I will do so seated (do excuse me). Many residents told me that they felt very fortunate to be in Singapore as the COVID-19 situation has been well controlled so far. Happy to meet the clients, staff and volunteers at Christian Outreach to the Handicapped centre at Tampines Blk 414. Heartening to see the passion and dedication to look after the more vulnerable segments of our society. I'm making good on my New Year resolution to cycle more in 2021, starting with a ride with my fellow Active Mobility Advisory Panel (AMAP) members around the Jurong Lake District over the weekend. This is part of LTA’s upcoming #ExploreSG campaign to encourage everyone take up to cycling as a green, affordable and convenient choice of commute. There will be several fun and scenic curated cycling routes - which offers a glimpse of places of interest in Singapore, and the ease and convenience of our cycling paths as we introduce more active mobility features in our towns. Jurong Lake District, for instance has 15km of cycling paths, with more to be completed in Taman Jurong this year. I will be trying some of these #ExploreSG routes myself. Over the past 1-2 weeks, I have been receiving feedback from many residents about water seepage in their flats. Heavy rain is one major reason. Our flats are protected from the rain by walls, windows and the roof (for top floor units). If there is water seepage, the town council will repair the cracks in the wall and roof, or reapply the waterproof coating. However, if water is seeping through other cavities, eg window sill/frame or decayed aircon panel/frame, that is under the flat-owners’ purview. Despite the increased number of seepage cases, the town council is trying to schedule the inspection appointments based on residents' convenience, as quickly as possible. They will do their best to identify the cause, but as water flow is fluid, some cases will be best guesstimates and require further monitoring after repair. I know residents are definitely inconvenienced if the problem is not resolved, especially during this wet season. #屋漏偏逢连夜雨 I seek residents' understanding that external repair can only be carried out when weather permits. Many of our HDB blocks have solar panels installed at the rooftop. The panels would need to be removed first and hence roof works will take longer. We typically won't discover such problems unless there is heavy rain. Just like we won't know that the umbrella is leaking unless we use it in the rain. My condolences to Ms Goh Beng Choo on the passing of her husband Mr Yeng Pway Ngon. Yeng received the Cultural Medallion in 2003, and was a three-time Singapore Literature Prize winner. One of Singapore’s most distinguished Chinese-language writers with a wiring career over 50 years, Yeng has made immense and significant contributions to the Singapore Chinese literary scene. I had the honour of opening his exhibition at The Arts House in 2018.
