Straight lines leading to curves
Another beautiful geometrical exercise from the book “Snowflake, Seashell, Star” by Alex Bellos with illustrations by Edmund Harriss. The suitable straight lines appear before our eyes as a star with three hyperbolas as outline.

Ulam spiral
Ulam spiral is the pattern obtained when one sets all the natural numbers in a squared spiral and only colours the prime numbers. This representation of the prime numbers is due to the Polish mathematician Stanisław Marcin Ulam.
The Ulam spiral above gets to the number 400, for a more clear visualization of the interesting pattern obtained I recommend looking up bigger Ulam spirals!
This colouring beautiful mathematical exercise is taken from the book “Snowflake, Seashell, Star” by Alex Bellos with illustrations by Edmund Harriss.

Modern Art and Mathematics
Pollock’s dripped paintings are fractals very close to those we find in nature. Was he aware of this? Or was he led to this unconsciously following an aesthetic intuition?
In any case it is funny to have a math criterion for distinguishing a random dripped painting that any of us could do in ten minutes from a Pollock’s painting.
