Person A: “I’m sorry, but could you please stop doing that.”
Person B: “Uh…could you be a little more specific?”
Person A: “The muttering under your breath thing. You’ve been doing it since we got in here and it’s making it hard for me to concentrate on what I’m doing.”
Person B: “…(Person A), this is literally the first time I’ve spoken since we entered this damn place. It’s so creepy in here, I feel like my tongue’s made of lead. Whatever you’re hearing, it’s not me.”

Writing prompt:
Character A refuses to go through with an arranged marriage and upon arriving at their intended’s castle, promptly ties their bedsheets into a rope to climb out the tower window.
They only make it a few feet down before a voice startles them out of their wits.
“Well this is unexpected.”
They turn to see Character B (their intended) six feet to the left with their own bed sheet rope, climbing out of the adjacent window.

List of “I’m tired of (us) being kept as a secret” prompts
“Well, you’re clearly very good at keeping secrets. You’ve kept me — us — as a secret for so long, so of course you’d be good at keeping fucking secrets.”
“I’m tired of being something you want to hide away.”
“How long do we have to keep this up for?”
“I want to let the world know how much I’m fucking in love with you yet that’s the exact opposite of what you want.”
“Is this all I am to you? A— a dirty little secret?”
“Why can’t we let them know?” “About what?” “About us.”
“It’s starting to feel like you’re ashamed of me.”
“You wouldn’t kiss me like that in public, though, would you? It’s only behind closed doors when you care to act like we’re each other’s.”
“I hate that we can’t be loud and proud about us.”
“Acting like I’m not in love with you is so… It’s so tiring.”

Out of options, you pray to whoever’s listening to save you. As it turns out, there were a LOT of entities happy to bestow their divine providence upon you. Thing is, none of them knew the others were doing the same. The results are successful - albeit chaotic, to say the least.

“The stone corrupts all those who wield it, it is fueled by their ambitions and dreams. So we need someone with no ambitions, no dreams, someone who doesn't care about what the future holds for themselves. That's why we found you”
Biffty didn’t even look up from her book. She heard them, and they knew it, but she wasn’t going to dignify that with a response. She’d gotten away years ago, but surely they hadn’t forgotten what she was like already.
The head scientist got antsy when she turned a page for the third time. “I know you heard us, B-150. Don’t you care? We’re offering you a future, a real future! We’re giving you a way to get out of this… this dump! And these trashy little kids-”
Biffty slammed her book shut. She would listen to them degrade her all day, but never her home. Never her students. “Do not call this school a dump. And do not ever say a word against my students. I don’t need a stone to kill you. You made sure of that.”
The scientist looked at her. His hair was mousy, and he was pasty. “But… you have to understand what we’re saying! You could leave this place, you could make real progress in life, you could have dreams again!”
“And what the hell makes you think I don’t have dreams now?” The color in Biffty’s eyes had been changed a dozen times, but it was never enough to stop rage from showing when it hit.
Finally, one of the head’s backups opened her mouth. “Oh, come on. No one with dreams would be content here. You’re teaching at a public school! In Detroit!”
The rage was running in Biffty’s very blood now. She forced herself to focus on the flow of air in and out of her lungs. To allow that to cool the fire that threatened to engulf her common sense. She closed her eyes. Opened them.
“Just because you locked me away for years and tried to take my dreams away doesn’t mean you succeeded. You realized that it was human nature to dream, so you tried to keep me from my humanity.” Her robotic left arm clenched, the motors in her right leg whirring. “You failed at that too. You can’t take away my personhood, and you can’t ever make me want to go back.”
The third scientist tried their hand at convincing her. They had never been good at that, but they were especially bad today. “B-150,” they began, a bad start, “you’re not a human anymore, first off. You haven’t been since the day we found you. You’re a monster, a monster that we made, and monsters don’t dream. If you had dreams you would be a millionaire now, a tech genius, or a god, feared among men. You were our most successful experiment ever, in that department. But instead you’re here, in the first place that would accept a freak like you. Now take the stone, because the gods know it’ll be the only useful thing you’ve ever done in your life!”
They were getting up in her face now, apparently expecting her to be frightened of them. A part of her was, she supposed. The childish part, that still tried to convince her that no one ever loved her. The grown-up part of her saw that they were shaking, there were bags under their eyes, they stank of coffee and old sweat. They were desperate, just like she had once been.
“My name,” Biffy's tone was forceful now, and they stepped backwards, “is Biffty. I haven’t been your little freakshow pet since I was child. I have plenty of dreams. Just because they live in a dirty city doesn’t mean they aren’t dreams. Even if I didn’t have them, I wouldn’t want your stupid stone. I’m happy here. I don’t need money to be happy,” she looked at the tired one, “and I love to teach where people are grateful for any help at all.” she looked at the second one.
She turned to the head scientist, who had held her captive for years. “And you may think this school is a dump. But it’s people like you who keep it that way, people who think money should go to the rich and the poor should be grateful for your table scraps. Now, get the hell out of my school, before I send you to the real Hell.”
The head scientist was stubborn as ever. He knelt down on the floor so he was eye-to-eye with her, waving his weird magic stone around wildly. “B-150,” he paused, took a breath, began again, “Biffty, I’m sure you think you’re happy here. But real happiness is with us. We’re your family.”
The other two scientists were smiling just as forced as he was. Biffty couldn’t contain her laughter at the sight of them. The man who had seen her as nothing more than a lab rat for nearly a decade, on his knees and begging her to come back. His two compatriots, who had never spoken a word against him, standing by and smiling. These people called themselves her family? Pathetic.
“I never had a family. You made sure of that. I have one here. So you need to leave, or I swear you will never walk or write again.” She began using her robot hand to crack the knuckles of her human one, an old trick that she knew unnerved them.
The laser they had installed in her arm began to charge up. Kitchy, she knew, but everyone in the room knew how serious the threat was.
The head scientist glared at her. “You’ll regret this, when this piece of shit school falls down around your head.”
Biffty said, “Your shoes are untied.”
The head scientist looked down. His shoes did not have laces.
“Learned that one from those “trashy” kids. They can be a lot of fun, actually.” Biffty’s smile was cold despite the seemingly casual joke she was playing.
The scientists got up and left, slowly. Their loss, really. The kids outside at recess had been listening the whole time. One smiled at her from the window, holding up a switchblade and pointing at the tires of the van the academics had driven here.
The sound of the children’s laughter mixed with the screams of rage from men of science and logic was music to Biffty’s ears. She tilted back her head and laughed too, knowing that no one here minded that it sounded a little strange.
“The stone corrupts all those who wield it, it is fueled by their ambitions and dreams. So we need someone with no ambitions, no dreams, someone who doesn’t care about what the future holds for themselves. That’s why we found you.”
