The ’EARTHWORM JIM: THE FIRST MOVIE’ Mini-Script Done!

This short movie script is taking the EWJ fans back to video game franchise roots. 

I recently wrote a mini-script called Earthworm Jim: The First Movie inspired by the classic ’94/’95 video game franchise Earthworm Jim. I wanted to express my enthusiasm for Interplay property with this passion project as well as wanting to give some boost to this unfairly mistreated great IP.

The script itself can be considered as a kind of short movie made specifically for the proof of concept of a possible future feature film-length movie. This is a completely new original stand-alone story from the EWJ universe it would come at the beginning of the movie with the rest of it being even more spectacular.

I was personally deeply inspired (and had a trip down memory lane) writing this short movie script into which I tried to fit as many fan-favorite, classic EWJ elements as I could - given the limitations.

As a writer I was very interested to explore how the franchise could be brought back to life and to point out what cosmic-sized, fantastic untapped potential is hidden in it.

With this work the development process is not yet over. I plan on continuing the development of the script with the involvement of the EWJ community and at a later stage I might work out this concept into a feature-length movie screenplay.

The concepts of the first 2 parts of the video game series are funky, weird and rule-breaking. I also tried to do something similar when creating the story idea. I was thinking about an epic cinematic story that includes everything we found enjoyable in the games. Except for Jim and Snott, none of the original cool video game characters are included in the current version of the script so far however I plan to bring them in later in the full story.

At the same time, I wanted to bring a brand new EWJ tale to gamers & fans of the franchise so that they experience the new video game mini-movie-exclusive story, challenges and characters(!!).

I also wanted to add more to the property thematically and raise public awareness of actual, relevant issues, such as capitalism, technology, climate change and related environmental issues. So finally a sci-fi epic & powerful tale about social & environmental responsibility has come out of it.

In addition, I tried to fill the story with a little more emotional moments to show what a huge, heroic heart is beating in Jim (and Snoot, of course!), despite his bulky, robotic super suit. I did not want Jim to look so cartoonish, I was thinking of something along the lines of Pixar’s emotionally complex/real characters.

Earthworm Jim: The First Movie is set in the near future where Earth is degraded to one of the most polluted corners of the universe by capitalism & technology. Earthworm Jim is the last hope and ultimate weapon of his beloved junkyard home planet who embarks on a new epic mission to save the Earth, as well as saving human survivors from alien forces aggressively targeting the planet’s mystical, all-powerful and final energy source.

I also would love to share other interesting things about the story/characters, but I don't want to spoil everything for the time being.
