i love how juri is like "utena u are such a fucking idiot for wearing a piece of jewelry that symbolizes your devotion to someone who inspired you as a child. your desperation is pathetic. you know nothing, dipshit" in the middle of one her nightly breakdowns at the fountain in her nightgown as she clutches the locket with a framed picture of her beloved girlfailure. the lady doth protest too much methinks

Touga and Juri's dynamic is so funny because he clearly has a lot of empathy for her while being unwilling to directly offer solidarity, and she is clearly completely indifferent to him except when he's being a nuisance lmao. Touga flat-out tells Shiori he won't hurt Juri, Touga doesn't take his car-cue for Juri until Ruka flat-out tells him "say your line," and Juri is giving her sword to Utena so she can kick Touga's ass without being prompted. I'm half-surprised there isn't a scene after Touga starts second-guessing his dynamic with Akio where he approaches Juri like "heyyy so I notice you're not wearing your locket lately, how'd that happen?" and she's like "are you seriously trying to compare my completely normal crush to-- I thought you were coming to yell at me for not letting Nanami stay in my dorm longer, get the fuck out of my room, Touga!"

I suppose the orange bloom on the cactus achieves the same thing while preserving the funniest part of the dynamic, which is that neither of them acknowledge its existence.

(I don't know how, but I feel confident that if Shiori & Saionji had tried to date, the amount of energy released from sheer senpai synergy in trying to break them up would have destroyed the entire system purely by accident. The explosion in the curry lab would have looked downright adorable in comparison. The revolution would not have occurred but they WOULD get a summer vacation from purgatory while Akio rebuilt the simulation.)

A lot of seemingly nonsensical takes on Juri made sense to me once it clicked that there are people who actually believe that SHE believes miracles aren't real. Like OOOOH, no WONDER it seems like you're watching a completely different and opposite show, you think this girl is doing all this shit because she ACTUALLY BUYS HER OWN BULLSHIT when what is actually happening is that this girl is frantically trying to get herself to believe SOCIETY's bullshit so that she has no hope and therefore can't feel disappointed when her hopes are dashed. It's not that she doesn't BELIEVE in miracles, it's that she thinks entertaining even the POSSIBILITY is a weakness, a form of self-sabotage, a completely avoidable way she is "asking" to get hurt.

She doesn't react to the sword the way she does because she disbelieves its miraculous-- you can tell just from her expression that she's deeply shaken, she's not ignorantly believing that what happened was within statistical likelihood or anything. She's freaking the fuck out and trying to deny it, because if there are miracles that means there's HOPE, and the last time she had hope HER CRUSH NOT ONLY DIDNT FULFILL HER HOPE OF LIKING HER BACK, SHE TRIED TO BETRAY HER AND ON TOP OF THAT *DIDN'T EVEN UNDERSTAND HER ENOUGH TO SABOTAGE HER /CORRECTLY.*

(Well, the last time she had hope OTHER THAN the time she had hope that maybe the girl who always wears GNC clothing and called her a supermodel might be hitting on her, only for that girl to explain she dressed butch BECAUSE SHE LOVES A MAN. Like damn dude, I would yell at the sword to shut the fuck up with giving me hope, too, after HALF that nonsense!)

When this photo was taken, I didn't know Revolutionary Girl Utena existed. When this photo was taken, I didn't know lesbians existed. I didn't know my true feelings.

I was supposed to be dressed as The Swan Princess Odette. I was having a birthday party, and had instructed all my guests to dress as princesses. I got angry at one girl for dressing as Xena; she knew what kind of princess I meant. All my guests were from my Catholic school.

I looked like this. I believed in miracles, and one day, I learned my true feelings. And across two decades and a language barrier, I found Juri.

"Now that's what I call a miracle."
