i think i just lost braincells.

it's always agonizing when people bend over backwards to delude themselves and invent 'representation'. but to discard actual canon rep (and extremely well-done heartbreaking gutwrenching multilayered canon rep) in favour of imaginary tropey nothingness?

pain. i am in pain.

y'know what i also really love about season 4 of doom patrol and its swinging back into good writing unlike season 3's latter half?

the biggest problem with season 3's entire rita-goes-back-in-time-amnesia plot was its insistence on overwriting everything that had been established about rita beforehand, bulldozing it into the dust and pretending none of it mattered... Including the very real very strong relationships we've already seen she's formed. But the season-3-amnesia-plot decided the only relationship that truly mattered to rita was the romantic one they tacked on to her in the past, and the history and platonic bond she shared with larry was left by the wayside.

I wanna emphasize this: the strongest, deepest, most loving and heartfelt connection Rita Farr has had with another human being was thrown into the trash, treated as garbage nothingness in comparison to some shallow romance with nowhere near as much time or depth shown to the audience. The show itself, rather than just being a character-specific flaw, touted this idea. Showed no consequences of Rita abandonning all that she was and all that she meant to other people, especially her (pretty much) life-companion Larry.

Season 4 acknowledged it. Season 4 did the bare minimum and showed Larry mention to Rita how he was bothered by her return from the past changing her and how they didn't have that bond anymore. Season 4 went 'ah i see, let's bring this back into a character-thing that works, rather than myopic writing'.

honestly i would have liked Rita and Larry to talk about that more, reinforce the importance of their friendship to the audience, find out where they stand with each other now... but the writing spent its time on other things and that's fine. It's mostly my aromantic heart aching for a continued emphasis on the importance of camaraderie.

also can i say i'm very VERY glad jane didn't end up with shelly/the fog?

their first lil flirt meeting in season 3 was kinda predatory on shelly's part; invading the space of a person who has a long track record with hating being touched, and then the writing just allowing it with no consequences, tumblr fanfic style. like, i appreciated how shelly talked about the underground and was very casual and understanding about all of them and jane being part of each other while still suggesting jane express herself as an individual, that's something jane/kay's needed... but still.

i'm much more satisfied with casey bonding with jane.

Oof... Learned today that the brand I used to work for is hiring graphic designers again and one of the requirements is, behold, 'experience/ familiarity working with Midjourney'. Said brand build its entire reputation on working (and priding itself in it!) with artists and showcasing their art, and taking parts in various artistic events. I have no words.

I knew AI would come for fashion industry rather quickly (especially for surface patterns), but seeing it (and from familiar source) it extremely discouraging still.

moving on to minecraft shenanigans now, i finally got ahold of soulsoil in the survival server i play on with my sister and friends (after dying a whole bunch and then exploiting a mod-made lil shortcut to get a single block of the stuff by dying even more), so my basalt-generator is operational...

and after all this time, craving basalt, because polished basalt is one of my favourite blocks in the entire game........... i can't even feel happy about it ... because mizuno's texture pack (which i use and REFUSE to do without) makes basalt blocks into dark plain pillars that my laptop screen has a hard time seeing... and i already have plenty of sources of darker blocks... and i'm just all around sad now ;__;
