okay follow up on cannibal billy shears does john know???? does he think billy is the real paul?? the implications are crazy i need more details on this

if we think about it from a mclennon perspective, he definitely notices on the first few days. i don’t think billy would last more than a week without john picking up on the discrepancies in personality and gestures —like the speech patterns, movements, little habits. so john would start getting suspicious, especially in moments that are more intimate, like hand holding or kissing. billy would act more uncomfortable and weirded out, but still try to keep his cool to maintain the facade.

i think john would eventually have a huge blowout fight with him, and he would be absolutely demolished emotionally at the concept of his best friend (and love of his life) being dead and replaced by a carbon copy. in an effort to not ruin everything, john would probably decide to pretend nothing is going on —literally gaslighting himself because it’s such an insane concept that no one would ever believe him. plus, billy is already getting better at pretending to be paul, so john convinces himself there’s no point in grieving openly when he can just pretend his paulie is still there. but he isn’t. that’s not his paulie.

from there, they’d become extremely codependent. john is essentially teaching billy how to be paul, so he can mold him into the version of paul he wants —not just the old paul, but a new one that fits into his ideal. billy, meanwhile, is the only one who can help john grieve, because he’s the closest “paul” left, even if he’s the reason the real one is gone. so john clings to him, and billy takes advantage of john’s vulnerability to secure his place.

this dynamic would get really messy, and probably violent at times. john’s frustration with the almost-but-not-quite version of paul would boil over, while billy’s resentment and obsession would keep him bound to john anyway. that tension could easily be another hidden layer behind the beatles’ breakup, not just artistic differences, but the fact that the relationship holding it together was built on grief, denial, and manipulation.

so essentially john is trying to erase the truth of paul’s death by molding his replacement into his ideal version of paul, while billy is exploiting that grief to cement his role. they’re both using each other, and it only pulls them deeper into obsession and destruction and i don't know guys i think that's kinda hot.

but i have a funny headcanon that billy shears is. in my mind he’s not just some random look-alike but he actually had some sort of relationship with paul prior to him being a beatle (either family — maybe he was a very similar cousin or even his twin or something and they lived in different houses — or just a friend he bonded with over their extremely similar features). after paul became very famous and beatlemania hit, their contact became almost minimal, making billy feel very betrayed and develop a really strong hate for paul and a heavy obsession with the other beatles. so in the headcanon the theory that paul died is true, but everything is very manufactured, because what billy truly planned was for everyone that found out about it to think paul died in an accident and he was just there to replace him. but in reality he is the cause of paul’s death — because he murdered him and ate his remains, and then acted as if he was paul in front of everyone else.
