rewatched ‘sorry about my nan’ and they accidentally told a really nice story about friendship with ethel’s tests (they didnt realize it, hence why ethel says at the end that the moral was that jim’s nan would always be there for him)

the first two tests expose weaknesses in jim and jamie’s friendship.

the first test shows that jim just assumes the only option is for him and jamie to be opposing each other and that he would actually follow through with trying to kill jamie—which is only stopped by luke’s character who lets them pass after he dies and this weakness in their friendship has been exposed

in the second test, the cabaret guy comes and forces them to do improv (which is actually such an interesting plot cause its very sort of alice in wonderland, normal dudes getting put in weird situations and the way aj and sam play it like the words are being forced out of their mouth by this weird magical emcee is so entertaining) in which their concerns are expressed by them literally sharing words and forming thoughts and sentences together and exposing their subconscious concerns. it exposes that lucy flirted with jamie and after that bombshell theyre allowed to move on

the third test is for jim to prove his friendship. lukes character pretending to be lucy when approached with the accusations that she flirted with jamie rebuttles it by saying “and you believed him?” to which jim says “of course i believed him, hes my best friend!” at which point eldritch luke character reveals that he’s not lucy and says that jim has passed the test and may move on

the moral seems to be that jim needs to keep and maintain his friendships after he gets married because jamie is a damn good friend and he has jim’s best interests in mind, and at the end of the day jim does really trust jamie

this is also thematically kind of perfect that the stag do followed them on this journey to understand and appreciate the importance of friendship so jim could carry that message and memory directly into his marriage and remember to make time for other people after getting married
