New Japan’s group training sessions would involve doing fitness and weight training, taking bump drills, sparring for two minutes, and then running through the entire circuit over again on a loop, set to a timer. Whenever Tanahashi and Nakamura came together however, there would be murmurs amongst the others around, and the senpai lifting weights would just stop in their tracks to watch us. Maybe because they felt (they were witnessing) something special, rarefied. One senpai actually said to me once: “You two were born under a rare star, from the very start.”
