i'm rereading crime and punishment partly bc i wanted to try a new translation (the nicholas pasternak slater one is really good) but also partly because i never understood why this napoleonic "right to commit crimes" theme is so often taken as the premise and thesis statement of the whole novel and the defining character trait of raskolnikov. and i wondered if maybe i just didn't fully get the text bc i read it for the first time in a feverish frenzy like rodya himself, but i got to this part in the book again and i honestly still don't see it. like yeah he wrote an essay about this in uni and he makes really good points there but the point is that raskolnikov is a sickly, starving, impoverished university dropout at his wits' end. he has nothing left to even pawn – the pawnbrokers have everything – what will it hurt?

i never saw his napoleon idea as a motive but just as an excuse for a desperate act, and i never saw the consequences as him realising the flaw in his logic or realising that he is only an "ordinary" person who mistakenly believes he has the "extraordinary" right to kill or whatever. because there are no biologically ordinary vs extraordinary people, there are only the impoverished and the priveleged, and raskolnikov's punishment is the simple guilt that wracks him from murdering fellow humans, even before he realises through lizaveta's friendship with sonya that they are not much different in class than himself.
