Rider God, 3rd to 4th century CE, Stow-Cum-Quy, Cambridgeshire, The British Museum, London
This British warrior-god, unlike the Classical Mars, is always depicted on horseback. The rider wears a crested helmet and a cloak that billows out behind him. His raised arm would originally have held a spear. His horse, with its mane twisted into plaits, is modelled as if in a gallop.
