CHILDHOOD
TRIGGERWARNINGS: mentions of abuse, fighting/arguments,
Charles is the youngest son of Mickey and Katherine Blackthorn. He was the last-born son in the Blackthorn household. He was a tiny little thing, and his father was convinced that the boy wasn't going to make it. Katherine had faith that her little boy would survive, and he did. Charles was absolutely adored by his grandmother, the woman was constantly looking after the boy when he was little. To say Charles was her favorite was an understatement. Charles often was found glued to his big sister Eliza. She would read to him and tell him stories all the time. Mostly in secret, otherwise his father would have had a tantrum.
Eliza was the reason that Charles was always fascinated by books and literature in general. She also was the reason he fell in love with musicals and anything theatrical. By middle school, Charles was often spending his free time at the library and working on set of some of the middle school plays. Eliza was the only one who knew about these little adventures and was supportive of trying to get him to try out for one of the plays. In some ways, that was their little secret, mostly because she knew what would happen if her father discovered this. Things ran smoothly until the night of Jack and the Magic Bean. Charles had worked hard and landed the main role. Eliza went to support him and couldn't have been prouder. However, that night was the same night that her older brother Mickey followed them.
Their father was told immediately and the following day after school, his brothers rounded him up and dragged him home. Eliza was unaware of the situation entirely. His brothers took their turns following their fathers' orders. While his other brothers held Charles down his eldest brother Mickey tipped his backpack open and out spilled a couple books. He watched as Mickey threw his books into the fireplace and laughed.
After that whole incident, Charles fell silent. He only spoke when spoken to and carried on with his business. He left that room with a busted lip and several bruises. His mother acted as if nothing had occurred and didn't even question the bruises. Eliza was a different story, but she watched as her brother shrank into himself. Soon falling into a pattern of doing whatever he was ordered to do by his father.
