It was the bell on her shop door that alerted her someone entering the front. Ariel had been in the back her attention lost to the countless items she had acquired. It was just so interesting to her. She poked her head out noticing he was looking for something. Putting down the brightly painted vase she headed to the front with some paper bags she needed to restock.
“Yes.” she said proudly popping up from where she was restocking the bags behind the counter.
She tapped her finger against her lip thoughtfully. “That does ring a bell. Don’t tell me it was yours and it was a theft.” she sighed. She did her best to make sure she bought things that were on the up and up but sometimes terrible things happened.

A grin spread across Basil’s face. That was exactly what he needed to hear.
“It was stolen, I’m afraid. But not from me.” He steepled his fingers. “I wouldn’t be here if it was your run-of-the-mill thievery, either. Those are actually quite boring. People are generally untrustworthy. But that particular stolen valuable seems to be connected to a murder.”
He was so caught up in the excitement of something turning up through this lead, he forgot that it was generally frowned upon to smile when discussing violent crimes.
“I’m going to need every detail you can remember about that box and who brought it to you.”

t clectricebelle:

“Oh–!” Belle let out a little cry of surprise as she bumped into someone, the book she’d been reading tumbling out of her hands and onto the floor. “Oh, I’m so sorry, I was just…” She gestured helplessly toward the book on the floor before kneeling to pick it up, gently brushing dirt off the cover. She flipped through the pages to find her place, fishing the piece of paper she’d been using as a bookmark out of her pocket and tucking it into place. She shut the book and looked up at him apologetically.
“I’m sorry,” she said again. “I just got to my favorite chapter, I wanted to get through this really great part before I…” She glanced down at the notes in his hand, squinting to read around the tear in the page. “Oh, I’ve read about that,” she said, her expression brightening. “Pretty fascinating, don’t you think? I have to admit a lot of it went over my head, though. Math and science aren’t really my forte, but I try to read a little bit of everything, you know?”

Basil sighed, clearly not happy with the unexpected interruption to his day, as well as the state of his notes. But, despite his frustration, he was about to throw together a half-assed, not-entirely genuine apology.
Until she mentioned that she’d actually read about the content in said notes.
“...You’ve read about using the relative atomic mass of an electron to calculate the Loschmidt constant of noble gases?”
It’s not that he didn’t expect a woman to be knowledgeable in chemistry. He’d read too many publications from renowned female chemists for that. Misogyny in science was, if nothing else, simply illogical. He simply didn’t expect to find a fellow chemist in the person he happened to quite literally run into in the university library.
“Ah. My apologies as well, by the way. I hope your book is in better shape than my notes?”

sparetootles:
The last thing Tootles expected was a total stranger to step in on his behalf. The kindness felt unreal to someone like him who didn’t experience it all too often. “Uh yeah, that.” He didn’t really follow what the guy was talking about but it sounded like actual proof to the actual truth of the matter, Tootles’s innocence. “Thank you so much.” His hands held tight against the bars of the cell as the police officers went in the back. It felt like he was actually gonna get out. The relief spasmed in his chest.
Tumblr media
“No need to thank me,” Basil checked something on his phone, not even looking at the boy. “It was painfully obvious you aren’t the one responsible. I don’t understand how they didn’t see it.” It was then he finally looked up -- just a little bit pleased with himself. “But I suppose that’s why they bring in consultants.” He pocketed his phone, adjusting the hem of his jacket. “They should be back to release you shortly.”

When Basil stepped outside of his apartment, he wasn’t expecting to see a car part directly outside of it. He knit his eyebrows. Usually, clients emailed ahead -- which was preferable, generally. Then he only had to talk in person for cases that were interesting enough to look into.
But the owner of the vehicle in question was wearing leather and had a general air of combativeness. Which meant there was a much more likely explanation than “client”.
“Oh, of all the -- “ He cut himself off, stopping to send a very forced smile over his thinly veiled frustration. “I do believe I settled my balance with Cooper two days ago. So I’d appreciate it if he’d stop sending people to my place of residence.”

While his days as a student had since passed, one thing that Auradon did have was a well-stocked library including a very thorough database. It was rare that Basil didn’t have an answer in his personal library. But it just wasn’t realistic to subscribe to every scientific journal. And that’s where the library proved to be a useful resource. He wasn’t sure what he would do if the university ever stopped letting community members utilize it.
He nearly jumped when he’d found the formula he was looking for. He jotted some notes down, and with them in hand, rushed away. In his haste, he promptly ran into someone rounding a corner before he’d even made it out of the room.
He brushed himself off, only to realize that in the collision -- his notes with the formula had ripped.
“Oh, for God’s sake.”

Basil knew the antique shop was a long shot. Hardly worth calling a ‘lead’. But, at the moment, it was the only one he had. And his job meant exploring even the most unlikely of possibilities.
He scanned the items, with no luck finding what he was looking for. He was ready to leave, to back to his notes, and reassess when he noticed someone had appeared behind the counter. Owner?
“Ah! Hello.” He jumped to attention. “Tell me, did someone donate or sell an oak box to you last Sunday? Just over twenty-five centimeters long. Engravings of olive branches.” The words rolled out in rapid succession.

Basil was staring intently at the skyline. It was one of the most unlikely of crime scenes. A simple street. Proving the innocence of his client depended on what one could view at this angle from precisely the spot he was standing. He was crouched slightly to account for a nine-centimeter difference in height.
And then someone was in front of him. His eyes narrowed at the figure who’d not only blocked his line of vision but, more egregiously, interrupted his thought process.
“Excuse me. You’re in my way. Kindly step to the side.”

walle-forthright:
Roachie was hopping side to side, his tail wagging violently when Walle picked him up. Deucedly? Walle didn’t know what that word meant, but was a little too embarrassed by their lack of intelligence to ask. They nodded, looking down at the ground in shame rather than the other’s eyes. “Y-yeah, that’s… I should’ve, I’m sorry.” They didn’t know what else to say for a moment, unsure if the man in front of them would even want to converse any more.

“Well, no harm done. Like I said, you’re forgiven. Repeating the apology is quite unnecessary” he responded. Indeed, Toby was calm now. Or, at least, as calm as could be expected; he was sitting. His tail thumped against the grass, indicating that he still very much wanted to play.
His eyebrows raised as a realization hit him. “You know? I think I left his old one here in the bag when I replaced it with the retractable.” He reached in and pulled out a leash -- hardly a fancy one, and not one he particularly cared about getting back if it wasn’t returned. In his mind, avoiding preventable danger was more important. “You’re welcome to borrow it if you need one. We’ll be taking a loop around the pond, shouldn’t be hard to find us in that area later.”

“Heel, Toby!” Basil tightened his grip on the leash. He had trained the dog. He had a keen sense of smell and could be relied upon when needed for cases. But that didn’t mean he wasn’t going to get excited when other dogs came up in a playful mood. But Basil got the leash shorter and the Basset Hound was starting to get under control.
“You’re forgiven. Toby certainly didn’t help matters. He can be so deucedly frisky.” Basil shook his head, giving his pet the most disappointed eyes before looking back at the other. “Although...in lieu of taking the word of a canine, might I suggest keeping the leash on in the future?”

“Roachie come back!”
Walle had told Roachie that he could go off his leash at the park if he promised to be a good boy. He blinked at them, which Walle assumed was a binding promise and let him go. He was good for about half a second before he went running off and started jumping up onto a random stranger. Walle sprinted to go get him and pick him up. “I’m so sorry,” they said, taking a step back and awkwardly avoiding eye contact. “He promised he’d be good…”

Basil had been at the station to question someone entirely different. But the shouting of the boy was rather hard to ignore.
But being a regular consultant for law enforcement meant he heard a lot of things most civilians didn’t. He was able to recognize the crime in question just based on the limited description he’d heard and the other information he had.
He went over to one of the officers. “If you’d take a look at the mud stains on his shoes, you’d know that the consistency and color is completely different from what you’d find at the crime scene. Had a very distinctive red shade, and it was raining -- couldn’t have gotten out of that location without getting splattered.” After Basil explained, the officer went to double check records to confirm. Basil simply rolled his eyes and went over to the cell with an irritated sigh. “Honestly.” The culprit Basil needed to talk to was still being questioned by someone else. So, at the moment, he was playing the waiting game.

“No no, you see, this is a BIG mistake, you must listen to me please. I was not an accomplice! Yes, he was my friend. Yes, he was trying to steal. But I had no idea that was going to happen! If I had known I would have told him to wear a mask to hide from the security cameras– which I realize pointing out does not help my case but please, believe me. I’m not a wanted man, I wasn’t even a wanted child! I am not apart of this crime or any crime and if I don’t get out of here soon I will be late to work.”  | @aforgottentale-starters

Is that [Jack Falahee]? No, that’s [Basil Baker] from [The Great Mouse Detective]! [He] appears to be [28] and they work at/as [Private Detective] at [Main Street Apartments].
tw drug use, tw addiction
Basil Baker is an Englishman who grew up in the heart of London.
He’s known for his strong observation skills and high intellect. But social skills are...rusty.
People describe him anywhere between “eccentric” to full-on “inconsiderate” or “tactless”. He rarely actually intends to insult the people around him -- most of it is just poor social awareness inadvertently causing those moments.
He’s new in town, having recently moved from his home in London.
For his work (and partially own enjoyment), he studies chemistry and has an at-home lab for when he can’t convince other labs to allow him to use their facilities.
One thing he wasn’t quite able to leave behind in London is a drug habit. He is a cocaine addict.
He is biromantic asexual.
He plays violin. Bach is his favorite, but he’s also been known to compose original pieces on occasion.
He’s a great detective. But sometime has a tendency to distance himself from sentiment and emotion in lieu of logic.
He takes cases both from individuals as well as consults from local law enforcement.
He has a Basset Hound puppy named Toby.
Nothing makes him more excited than a good closed-door murder. The more impossible the puzzle, the better. People have had to tell him not to get too excited about murders (or other violent-crime related cases.)
He knows he’s clever, and is proud of it.

I was seized with a keen desire to see Holmes again, and to know how he was employing his extraordinary powers. His rooms were brilliantly lit, and, even as I saw his tall spare figure pass twice in a dark silhouette against the blind, he was pacing the room swiftly, eagerly, with his head sunk upon his chest and his hands clasped behind him.
