i think if you choose to leave Zulf behind and then go for the evacuation ending the game should give you a pop up that says "hey what the fuck" and won't let you proceed

mt zand has actually been a good reminder of you are not immune to propaganda dot garfield for me. i've spent the whole game killing every monster, going out of my way, gotta get all the shards and the xp. i felt accomplished when i killed all the enemies in that one section of point lemaign and rucks told zia i was a badass for it. yeah i saved queen anne but so what? i didn't think about it. video game monsters. you know how it is. but you get rucks talking about how these monsters are building their own bastion, they're collecting shards, making their own sanctuary. i'm going through the level and killing everything i see as rucks is struggling to justify the kid's complete destruction of these poor creatures' home.

rucks says "but if we win, they win, too. our gain is everybody's gain" but i've beat this game and i know that's not true. you restart and you kill them all again and you keep restarting and killing them all again until you evacuate and leave them dead in the ground forever. this whole game is you destroying every creature the earth has created so a handful of people can live. i just feel actually sick from this. the final part of the level you're surrounded by creatures blasting at you from every angle. you think, i have to kill all of these, right? but there's a skyway in the very back, ready for you to take it. i had a moment where i thought i should kill these lungblossoms before i go. and then i finished the level and it faded out as rucks said "he's done what's best for them, don't you worry. don't you worry..." and i don't know how i'm going to keep playing

there's a lot to say about mt zand, mainly screaming, that i will get to after i've slept, but i think the level ending with rucks, who has spent the entire game more or less successfully justifying, prettying up, or downplaying every horrible action he, the kid, and the caels in general have ever committed against the ura and the world at large, telling zia "[the kid's] done what's best for them, don't you worry. don't you worry..." because they've hit this point of "the ends justify the means" where the ends are no longer justifying means but there's no way off so they just have to lie to themselves to keep going because if they don't they're all just going to have breakdowns.

all joking aside this actuator a really fascinating look into the general cael view of violence. this is a deeply horrifying weapon and it gets only a mild distaste, and even with that it's still considered to be effective enough to warrant use. when you take that and everything rucks says and has done and everything the kid has done and the whole calamity itself it's very clear the caels views the enemy, the other, as something that can be eradicated in any manner as long as it gets done. the creatures outside the wall, the ura, they're Not Us and they're in the way so they don't deserve mercy. do whatever you can to get rid of them, however violently you want; it doesn't matter because they're lesser. the ends justify the means. i'm going to be thinking abt this forever.

something about "frowned upon" is killing me here, like it's just the most mild response to this war crime of a weapon, just like "you know i just don't agree with a weapon that literally explodes inside of people, a thing that is definitely some kind of human rights violation, but by gosh it really does work." 10/10 love the hyperviolence of the caels.
