Perched on a stool in the Wayne Manor kitchen, Cass swung her feet idly as she tucked into a bowl of ice cream, eyes roving around the room. They lit on Tim as he came in, and she smiled, waving her spoon at him as her latest bite of ice cream melted in her mouth. “Hi, Tim!” she said. She pushed the carton across the kitchen island, beaming at him again. “Look, it’s chocolate,” she said, pointing at the carton with the spoon. “My favorite,” she added with relish, before reaching out and patting the stool next to her with her free hand. “Come sit?” she said. “You can have…” She pointed at the carton again. “If you want.”

Reaching out, Cass gently tapped the woman on the shoulder. “Did…?” She held up the book she had found on the ground. “Did you…?” Looking up at the woman, she offered her a smile, asking silently for her to be patient. Cass was still learning so many things, including speech. “Drop this?” she finished, holding it up again. She carefully brushed any dirt from its cover, running a finger over the edges of the pages to make sure there weren’t any leaves or little twigs caught between the pages. “I found it,” she said, and pointed. “Over there.”
