Upon the recommendation of a friend, I started watching Gintama anime. Tbh, I just got on the series because my friend told me Oguri Shun would be playing the role of Sakata Gintoki in the live action adaptation of Gintama. Curious, I started watching the anime first so I know how well OguShun portrays Gin-san. And I wasn't disappointed one bit.
As I watched, season 1 were mostly gags and trolls with a little bit of serious stuff sandwiched in between. I already noticed Tae and Sacchan being there from the beginning and I wasn't really very much into shipping Gintoki with her or with anyone in particular because of the theme of the anime.
However, things turned around came Season 2. When Yagyu arc rolled, I started noticing things in a different light. Especially the dynamics between Gintoki and Tae. I was drawn and later got into the GinTae ship with their sustained relationship. Their relationship dynamics were cleverly interwoven in the background of the main story, not really in the spotlight. In that clever and subtle story-telling of Sorachi, you don't question GinTae's rapport because Sorachi gradually built and established them and don't tell me it's all because she's Shinpachi's sister, how about Kagura calling her Anego then? Just like how Sorachi-sensei gradually established their rapport, they gradually grew on me as well. Especially in the Yagyu Arc when Gintoki was very serious about Tae's well-being.
I did not ship Gintoki and Tae as an item right off the bat. But when I saw the seriousness of Gintoki when he (well they, Yorozuya and the Shinsengumi did join forces to defeat the Yagyu) tried to defeat the Yagyu clan and when he tried to dissuade Tae from doing something her heart is not in, it was all it took for me to jump in and join the GinTae ship. The way Tae cares for her extended family ie the Yorozuya always gets me. Plus the other characters throwing shade(?), shedding light on what kind of relationship they have makes me wonder what's the real score between them. And all the GinTae crumbs from other episodes and live action especially the live-action adaptation of Benizakura (let me just squeal) fueled my love for the two.
