I was really sad about this, but then I remembered I was born in 1995 and SGR has been going on for most of my lifetime. These comics got me through the two worst times of my entire life (i found SGR during my second semester of college, when i first started experiencing depression, and reread the archive to make my first semester of my senior year bearable, which is when i was student teaching in a pretty toxic environment), and I’m glad they’ll always be there. I can’t wait to revisit them, and I can’t wait to see what’s next.

The beginning of the end

Today I have a piece of news that is exciting, maybe sad, probably predictable, and overdue. Hard Yards will be the last story set in the little Tackleford universe we’ve been visiting nearly every day since 1998. While I still love the characters, I feel like I’ve done almost all I can with them, and for the last two years I’ve been trying to find ways to create a satisfying end to things, or a possible way to continue that felt somehow the same, but new. In the end I’ve had to settle on ending things.

Things might have been different if Giant Days hadn’t proved so successful – I figured that after its 6-issue run was over by autumn 2015, I’d start work in earnest on a new thing. Issue 28 is out on Wednesday, and no one has told me to stop yet. The new thing remains elusive, but some ideas are beginning to come together at last.

I don’t know exactly when the last strip will be, just that it will be before the end of 2017, so I’ll let you know when we get into the final straight. In the meantime, as you were.

One thing: while webcomics are still viable, I don’t want to pack up and go home. If possible, my new series will start the week after Scary Go Round/Bobbins/Bad Machinery/&c. finishes. The daily conversation with an audience is incredibly energising, creatively, and every day I get to sit and draw for you is full of discovery and purpose. It is a privilege. So I’d better get back to it.
