Rethinking the world. Welcome to the official Bauhaus Movement Magazine. The State Bauhaus was founded by Walter Gropius as a school of arts in Weimar in 1919. As the Bauhaus was a combination of crafts and arts, its nature and concept was regarded as something completely new back then. Today, the historical Bauhaus is the most influential educational establishment in the fields of architecture, art and design. The Bauhaus existed from 1919 to 1933 and today the world considers it to be the home of the avant-guard of classical modern style in all fields of liberal and applied arts. The resonance of the Bauhaus can still be felt today, essentially characterizing the image of German design abroad. www.bauhaus-movement.com

Gertrud Arndt was one of the few Bauhaus women who designed with exceptional clarity and precision. She designed her carpet from 1924 as part of the experimental weaving studio in Dessau - an early masterpiece of modern textile art.

The Wassily Chair, designed by Marcel Breuer at the Bauhaus in 1926 and produced today by Knoll Inc., is considered the beginning of modern furniture design. It was one of the first designs to use steel tubing, and its elaborately shaped frame is covered with leather. Breuer's design is very modern in the way it shows the chair's shape. It combines beauty and function in a new and exciting way. Photo © Ralph Graef
