You probably got a hold of his particular cartridge through some shady online seller willing to sell for a lower price than the ungodly amounts of expensive it usually is, or downloaded a sketchy ROM file of Pokemon Red without caring if you got a virus or not, either way he's there.

Though he doesn't directly make his presence known to you right away.

His presence is noticable through your playthrough, you don't think the game is supposed to glitch out this bad ? Did you accidentally download/buy a romhack ??

And you could've sworn you've heard a voice multiple times as well, but chalked it up to you feeling a tad nervous because of how unnerving the glitches in the game where. If it where a romhack, it probably would've said so on the product's description/website.

At some point though, he does make more of an effort to communicate. Your controls stop working, you can't shut down the gameboy/can't close the tab running the emulator. His voice is clearer this time, still bitcrushed through the quality of the game and the music completely pausing to make room for his speech;

" what do you want from me. "

You're absolutely hopeless in chatting more with him if you've got a copy of Pokemon FireRed or LeafGreen laying somewhere/in your files, or if you've gotten to this point through forcing glitches/cheats into the game.

He'd probably want to interrogate you on your intentions of messing around his game at first. Though he has all the time in the world to keep you locked in conversation and to cage you from anything else, until he can trust you at least by an ounce.

Which isn't an easy task ! He's quite paranoid because of his previous players, even something as terrible wording will get him suspicious of you.

Assuming you'd manage that... Yeah he doesn't think he'll let you continue playing either way. Turns out him being forcefully moved against the pixelated map is not his favorite activity.

It's actually pretty uncomfortable being dragged around against his will !

You go to try and turn off the gameboy/shut off the tab again after reassuring him that you'll return the next morning to talk more, and that you won't try anything fishy as you're feeling tired from staring at the screen for so long, and it looked like his sprite shrugged. He was indifferent.

And you keep chatting with him for ages, as it seemed. The first time he was surprised you came back and returned to your save file to just... Talk, but he wasn't entirely against the concept. Things got too quiet for his liking without chatter, and the noise of the different towns, routes and battle music made his head ring after a decade or two.

It eventually evolved into you keeping the emulator tab opened/gameboy running as you worked or indulged in hobbies occasionally, simply having him along for the ride. This would be weeks, or months after the initial first handful of encounters.

And even then, he never truly lets his guard down around you, but in knowing him for the while you have, you don't blame him or pry when he doesn't want to give answers right away.

You've also made it a habit to not mention gen III (3).

But besides that, he started talking more to you ! Less in response and more on his own accord, bringing up topics he's interested in on occasion.

You come to find that Red as a character's love of pokemon still carries on in him, speaking about then often. Movesets, typings, the Kanto starters, even though he's more aware of his situation he still wishes he could keep an Eevee and Pikachu along with his starter of choice, Charmander.

He knows they're nothing but strands of code, they're nothing like him at all, but he cares for them all deeply despite this. He can only pray that they don't have to feel the same jolts of pain he has to.

Things are pretty chill overall. You get an unexpected friend, Red feels a little less alone in the fabricated world around him.

Instead of posting to AO3 like I could be, and maybe I will after I make some content here, I made an entire side blog dedicated to whatever the hell I wanna write about Hypnos Lullaby or Pokepastas.
