Summary of Achievements in Mallorca, Spain
1. We used our backpack weather stations to monitor temp, humidity, carbon dioxide and UV radiation all over the island and created quite a stir among locals and tourists alike. We have been invited to bring students to Australia in November 2018 to conduct similar activity.
2. We have set up a solar powered/wireless weather station for a local high school, Colegio san Cayetano.
3. We conducted a STEM workshop for some 80 local high school students.
4. We conducted a Collective Social Learning Workshop for 350 local students.
5. We had a live Skype session connection with the Great Barrier Reef in Australia that was very educational experience for our students and others in attendance. Lot of the session dealt with coral reef habitat destruction.
6. Held a STEM Workshop for 30 American high school study abroad students.
7. Had a visit to the Spanish Oceanographic Institution where students learned about marine ecology issues facing Europe and dissected 馃悷 to 馃憖 on the health of their species.
8. We visited the famed Cathedral that was built in the 16th Century and while collecting climate and pollution data. Also visited Bellver 馃彴 built in the 12th Century whilst collecting climate/pollution data.
9. We had a 10 mile 馃毚 ride along the Palma coast while collecting climate data and pollution using the backpack weather stations.
10. We had a 4 mile trek through the mountains from the town of Soller to Deia while observing plant and animal biodiversity and remnants of Arab agricultural practices when they ruled Spain.
11. We had a 1hr (each way) 馃殼 ride to Cabrera National Park (also a military installation) while collecting climate/pollution data and tested the 馃毎 quality of the surrounding waters.
12. We were able to help a University of the Balearic Islands graduate student (Beatriz Torres) to decide on her Ph.D. thesis topic when we did the Barrier Reef Skype. She will travel to Australia in November and to Bronx to connect with a thesis advisor, Dr Joe Rachlin from Lehman.
