I sit quietly and think of
a thousand poems
a million words
as many as it takes to bring you back
tumultuous waters in my mind
I am swimming calmly
for you
picking up each river stone searching for clues
did you think you were loveless?
undesirable in the eyes of god?
so filthy that showers couldn’t clean
is that why you drank so much?
drinking, without looking
hoping to confuse a bottle laced with poison
and by no fault of your own
expire on the bathroom floor?
well you eventually did it
nobody saw the signs
nobody sat you down
and read you poetry from sun up
to sun up
nobody told you the sun stays in the same place
time is an illusion we came up with
to tell each other when to move on
and when to fall asleep
it’s time to sleep
I’ve been reading for hours
while you listen silently
you could never move on
so now it’s time to rest

“I hate this feeling. Like I’m here, but I’m not. Like someone cares. But they don’t. Like I belong somewhere else, anywhere but here, and escape lies just past that snowy window, cool and crisp as the February air.”
— Ellen Hopkins

“I want to talk about what happened without mentioning how much it hurt. There has to be a way. To care for the wounds without reopening them. To name the pain without inviting it back into me.”
