❝ just one more –- ❞ remy speaks up again , moving with the momentum of an angry and uncomfortable crowd. ❝ are you in charge here ? are you the big boss man ? ❞ he doesn’t mean to antagonistic , but if the opportunity arises , he knows that he’s going to take it. it’s who he is , it’s always been who he is. ❝ i mean , come on man – it’s the end of the world here and there’s no cots or blankets ? what kind of hospital is this ? ❞
he sighs once he hears more questions come out of the other man’s mouth. this is not going to be easy, he realizes. “no, i’m not the ‘big boss man’”, he repeats. “but i was told by my higher-up to help out, so here i am.” eli motions to the staff handing out some blankets to a few of the elderly people in the lobby. “we’re first making sure the sick, the elderly, pregnant women and children are taken care of. once those supplies are handed out, we’ll start handing out what extras we have. unfortunately, hospitals are not equipped to be shelters. so again, sir, i ask - please be patient while we figure things out.” he shrugs lightly. “we’re just in the dark as you are.”

someone had to know something… probably. unfortunately, matteo’s head was still half occupied with the reason he’d decided to come to perdonia in the first place, and whatever had set off all these alarms was still only getting half of his attention. right now, it just seemed like a big inconvenience, and he was ready for it to be over.
glancing at the doctor’s shrugs, he gave an almost sheepish smile. “right, yeah. i got it. not exactly your priority. i’ll see if i can keep the emergency room from self-immolating. and if you find out anything, you’ll let me know, yeah?” he asked, but it wasn’t really a question.
the frustration of not knowing what was truly happening was starting to get to him. someone around here had to know something, or at least have some sort of answer. it’s not like he had direct contact with some of the higher ups. even then, he didn’t know if they knew anything. they could be just in the dark as he is, and he hated thinking about that.
he nodded again. “thanks, man, i appreciate it. i think we’ll appreciate all the help we can get. if people are causing trouble, you might wanna find security, though.” eli outstretched his hand to the stranger. “name’s eli, by the way. i’ll let you know if i find anything, but let me know if anyone needs anything.”

Ari nodded at the man kneeling in front of her. She was fine, or at least she was physically. She pushed herself up with one hand, grabbing his hand with the other. “I think I just need to get out of this crowded room. Or maybe I just need to make myself useful.”
He nodded at her words. “Unfortunately, I think it’s crowded everywhere, but we might be able to find you a less crowded spot.” There had to be some place where there was open seating, or at least an open space on the floor. “Uh -- miss, you don’t really need to help. We just want to make sure everyone’s safe.”

—- FINALLY. a familiar voice. with a reliefed sigh that fell from her lips, the surgeon immediately turned around to face the person the sound was coming from. it was so good to see someone of the staff & apparently someone, that also had no single clue what was going at the moment. “ sure ”, alex just mumbled at his question, not hesitating to find a QUIET place in this crowded hospital. yet it seemed impossible. people were already shoving each other, yes, even s c r e a m i n g at each other because they were blocking the way or a chair. people could get so rude and selfish when their life was in danger. it was horrible and the surgeon hated every single second of this. finally spotting an on-call room at the end of the hallway, she didn’t hesitate, carefully grabbed the arm of her colleague & started to shove her way with him through the mob. after all, it was the ONLY way to get through.
it felt like ages when they finally reached the door, but once she reached for the doorknob, alex realized that it was locked. OF COURSE. “ apparently some fuckin’ colleagues think they can just lock themselves inside there while we have to handle this… situation ”, she hissed through gritted teeth, before turning around to her male companion. what a sudden outburst, yet it doesn’t really surprise herself. such a crowd was a huge t r i g g e r for the veteran. “ uh – sorry about that. ” usually the other hospital staff doesn’t see her like this. actually never. “ & i’m also SORRY we can’t find a proper place to talk in quiet, but… ” carefully she looked around, hoping the people close to her wouldn’t understand what she was saying. “ if you wanted to ask me about what the hell is going on here… i honestly don’t know either. i get the feeling no one knows anything. ”
he tried his best to tune out some of the chaos going on around him. as much as he wanted to help, he wasn’t sure what he could do. the last thing he wanted to do was get in the middle of a potential fight when there was still work to be done. he followed alex to the on-call room. the last thing he wanted to do was start chatting about what was going on in front of panicking people, so a quiet place would be nice. that is, until they found the door was locked, and alex snapped. at first, he raised an eyebrow, then looked on in concern. he hadn’t seen her like that before. “it’s fine, don’t worry about it,” he replied. they had bigger things to worry about, anyway.
once the answered the question he had in his head, he sighed and ran a hand down the side of his face. “i was hoping someone would at least have an idea,” he said as he tried to keep his voice down near the on-lookers. “nobody’s answering their pagers, i think some of the doctors just left when the alerts went off, and where’s the chief of staff? shouldn’t he be out here? shouldn’t he know something?” at this point, he felt he was grasping at straws. someone higher up had to know what was going on, right? they had to have some idea. he lowered his voice again. “do we even know - is there any major confirmation that it’s related to the virus? last i checked there weren’t any reported cases in california. i thought they contained it to houston, that’s what they told us in the last meeting.”

𝐃𝐈𝐃 𝐒𝐇𝐄 𝐌𝐀𝐊𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐑𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 𝐂𝐇𝐎𝐈𝐂𝐄 ?? it had been sheer curiosity that caused her to seek out the hospital , see if the alert was legit or if someone had planned it as a joke . what she had always put off as a weird conspiracy theory was revealing itself as a l e t h a l truth and she wasn’t sure how to respond . despite whatever was happening , barrett had a feeling that regardless of where she went , this was much more than something anyone could stop . it’d go away on its own , right ? if it was some type of illness , though , the best chances of survival could be hanging around the one place who would have help if available . there’s a couple people panicking but she’s calmer than most , her feet kicked up on another chair . when one of the employees starts to attempt to take control , the girl remembers him from the diner . they’ve spoken before , his name is eli if she remembers correctly , and it gives her the confidence to speak . distancing herself from the spot she’s earned in the corner of the waiting room chairs, barrett approaches him with her hands in her pockets . ❝ yeah , you guys got any extra pillows or blankets ?? kind of tired , wanna take a nap in the meantime . ❞
for the most part, people take what he’s saying well. he knows people are panicking, but nobody has lashed out yet about what’s going on. it makes him feel bad that he doesn’t have answers, considering some of the looks on the people’s faces, but what can he do? he doesn’t want to lie to them and say that everything’s under control. he makes one last comment about finding a staff member if they feel sick before he moves to find something to do. that is, until a woman stops him. she looks familiar - he’s pretty sure her name is barrett and that she’s a waitress at that diner he likes. “um, possibly,” he answers while raising an eyebrow. “i think we’re trying to hand out what we have to the elderly, the injured, and children, though,” he says, motioning towards a receptionist handing a blanket to a little girl. “it’s possible we might have some extras later, though. i can try to let you know or you can ask another staff member to see if there’s any extras.”

leaning against a wall, santi looked up slightly at the sound of an authoritative voice. these people were in need of a leader, but he wasn’t looking to start feigning a sheep for the nearest shepherd. everything thing he said seemed to make enough sense, but nothing sat well with this whole situation. pushing off the wall, santi emerged from the masses. “yeah, i gotta question, doc ── lotta people in this room…how do we know none of ‘em have that VIRUS?”
the stranger’s question took him by surprise. he saw the crowd go silent, and he sighed. “we’re doing what we can to separate those who are showing signs of illnesses and those who are not. as you may know, it is incredibly difficult to differentiate between regular flu-like symptoms and this virus.” the truth is - they didn’t really know. it was close to impossible to see if someone was just sick or if someone had whatever this virus was. “that’s why we will ask anyone who is showing signs of an illness to calmly re-locate with one of our staff. does that answer your question, sir?”

he tried to think back, to remember if he’d seen any security around before the doors had slammed close, but it had all happened fairly quickly. he hadn’t been paying much attention to security when the doors flooded with people and then slammed closed. stretching his shoulders slightly, matt frowned and bit his lip. his mind was still trying to come up with the best case, worst case, and most likely scenario.
and frankly, the worst case scenario seemed pretty damn bad. but it was pretty far from likely. “there might be a security firm in charge of things, and they might call in back up, but it seems pretty unlikely, with all that’s going on. but they’ve definitely got someone in charge. maybe they’ll have a better idea of what the hell’s going on now. or at least they have an emergency plan.”
if he was being honest, the last thing on his mind was security. what he was mainly thinking about was what the hell was going on and how the hospital was going to take care of all these people. sure, security was important, especially since a bunch of people that they did not know just came scrambling in. he just hoped that there was no one looking to cause some trouble in the hallways.
eli pinched the bridge of his nose as he tried to take in what the other man was saying. “yeah, yeah, you’re probably right. someone has to know what’s going on.” he loudly sighed before looking back up at him. “sorry i can’t be more help. if the scrubs didn’t give it away, i usually work in surgery, so i don’t really know the answer to these types of questions,” he admitted.

matt slowly nodded as the man answered him. he actually felt sort of relieved. he hated not having information, not knowing exactly what was going on around him. and being a commander with the special forces, he was used to being in charge. so it was somewhat of a comfort to know that even if he was totally clueless, at least no one else was any wiser.
he made a mental note of the chief of staff’s name, though he figured it was unlikely that he’d run into him. at least, he hoped not, because they’d have to be locked in here for a pretty long time before he got that desperate. “alright, alright, i got it. how much security have you got around here? it seems like you might need some more.”
he was glad that the other man was taking it well. he hated the fact he didn’t have all the answers and couldn’t help these people. many of them looked disappointed when they realized everyone was in the dark, but there was almost nothing he could do. the chances of learning more were slim at the moment, but he hoped he would eventually learn.
eli rubbed the back of his neck as he tried to think about security. “i’m not entirely sure, but i know there’s usually a few on every floor. i think some of left once the alerts went off.” he shrugged. “i don’t really know if there’s anyone we can call in. the police line is probably jammed right now.”

misericvrdias·:
𝐎𝐍𝐄, 𝐓𝐖𝐎, 𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐄𝐄. she once learned that counting could ease ones rage, fear or panic. numbers invaded her mind the moment she sat down on one of the seats of the hospital’s waiting room, in an attempt to calm down. but hands would not cease to tremble, and the pounding of her heart did not seem to decline. doe eyes seemed to be even more lost than usual; the desperation and uncertainty that reigned within the room caused an immense anxiety within her and she wondered what exactly occurred out there. something, had shaken up the building upon their arrival and it was enough to set her on edge, alongside the many screams of the people and the constant questions that emanated out of their lips. and yet, she remained silent; observant. she wondered if anything else would happen, if things were as bad as her gut seemed to hint at. for a moment, she felt nauseous, truly nauseous ––– like the type of sickness that leaves one pale, not a hint of red on her cheeks. it was then that she decided to dart for the water fountain, hoping that at least a bit of water would help. but, before she knew it, as she scrambled through the masses she stumbled with another, causing her to take a few steps back in order to assess the person. “ i’m sorry –– i’m sorry , ” she started to quickly apologize, eyes locked on the floor before she finally managed to look up and meet the one she had bumped into.
eli’s mind was elsewhere as he walked through the hallways of the hospital. he was trying his best to keep calm, which was proving to be difficult with everything going on. there was no way he could start freaking out though, he knew. people were counting on him, especially the patients who still needed medical care. it didn’t help that some of the doctors and nurses had seemingly disappeared: they probably fled when the alerts went off. now, he was left to pick up a bunch of work and help in areas he normally rarely went to. he was looking at a clipboard of information regarding a patient when he felt someone bump into him. “oh, i’m sorry, excuse me--” he began before looking down at the stranger in front of him. she looked familiar, but he couldn’t put a name to her a face. probably just someone i’ve seen around, he thought before he raised his eyebrows. “miss, is everything okay? you look a little, um...worried. if you need assistance i can help you find someone.”

his eyes roll at the man taking charge over the situation. remy never did well with authority , who was he to tell him to stay out of patient rooms and private areas ? ❝ yeah , i’ve got one, ❞ he speaks up , matching his volume. ❝ are you gonna force us all to stay in this waiting room ? what about the injured , or the elderly ? ❞ he points to two conveniently injured and old people near him , looking at the speaking guy. ❝ i’m sure there are some empty rooms somewhere –- or private areas we can go other than here. ❞
the other man’s question surprised him. he furrowed his eyebrows at the man’s tone, but continued. “there are other waiting areas on other floors with chairs, couches and outlets that i highly suggest many of you go to. we ask that you not go into patient rooms because many of them are very, very sick or they have requested to be left alone. private/restricted areas are often dangerous due to potential chemical contamination if you are not wearing the correct equipment.” he looks over at the two people the man motioned to, but two nurses make there way over to them before he can move. “if anyone needs medical assistance, please flag someone down. are there any other quetions?” he asks to the room.

eli didn’t want to admit it, but it felt like the world was ending. people were scattered throughout the hospital, some panicking, some crying, some still trying to flee even after the loud booms. he was trying to help as many people as he could, but most asked the same question - “do you know what’s going on?” he hadn’t a clue. as far as he knew, nobody else had an idea, either. he had a major suspicion - something about the virus that had been in the news lately - but he didn’t want to say that out loud without knowing for sure.
once a small group was done asking him questions, he moved down one of the hallways, searching for anyone he knew. many people had made the hallways their temporary homes, so he had to move around strangers as he searched. finally, he spotted a familiar brunette down the hallway. “hey - alex!” he yelled, probably a little louder than he meant to, considering people were staring at him now. he avoided their eyes as he made his way over to the surgeon. he was about to ask her straight out until he saw how concerned some of the people looked, and sighed. “do you mind if i speak with you in private? just for, uh...just for a few minutes.”
