Week 5 - Week 6
We are looking more closely at divergent thinking and trying to cover both user/consumer and business sides of the project. Looking past the idea of the project and the realities behind what the project would look like money wise and development wise.

Week 4 - Week 5
We had some feedback on the project which was insightful and very helpful. It also reassured us that we were on the right track and that realistically we can carry this project onto next semester if we wanted too. This could really help with our creative workflow and development process. As we are still in the decision stage and focussing on research and audience.

We are currently using a Miro board to break down our ideas.
Problem - the lack of knowledge around the Maori culture and variety of learning experiences.- minimal technological experiences and equipment when it comes to breaking down culture or cultural experiences
Possible Storytelling elements:
3 different virtual cultural experiences/activities that the user will be surrounded by, and has to complete in order to escape
1. Cooking ( preparing a Hangi)
2. Combat (using a Taiaha, learning different techniques)
3. Carving experience
At the end, read brief history on
marae:
- Learning about different features of a marae
- Learning about the purpose of the marae and its cultural significance

Week 3 - Week 4
A more in depth break down. I have come to a stand still this week and have struggled with some ideas on what to follow up and realised that if I wanted to do AR/VR work I would need to team up with others as I don’t have the best understanding of how this works but also haven’t taken any papers to do this. Therefore, I have teamed up with Thomas, Ray, Tim and Raj to develop something that we can call contribute too and all have passion for. Which surrounds culture and using technology.

Week 2 - Week 3 I am currently still sitting in ideation. However, I have a hand full of ideas/problems that I am wanting to pursue. This will help set me up for what project I am wanting to focus on. In CTECH705 we looked closely at system thinking and wider contexts. In addition, different tools that we can use to develop our ideas and make sure that we are looking at different aspects such as social, political, ecological etc. It was very helpful as it was also a refresher of what we were learning in our first year and integrated practices and entrepreneurial paper. After this week I put together a small and easy chart that will help set a standard of what I am wanting to do every week for this semester.

Workflow
Week 1 - Week 2
We have gone over what is workflow and what it looks like - using different types of mapping and creative flows. After looking at my studio paper I have decided to base my workflow on this. At the moment I am still in ideation. I am a currently lacking some creative ideas for my studio paper but I am trying to link as many papers together as it will make it easier for me to manage as my time management is shocking.
Aim this week: Focus on what is in my control right now. What problems are currently affecting my community, family or world - this can help narrow down my ideas. Look into collaboration and people who align with the same views and passions.

Product development
Decided to go with Plastic Clear Shield attachment in the front. Using materials Plastic Transparent or Acrylic Clear. I would probably use Plastic Clear only because it looks easier to print and use.
If possible I would like to print with Nylon using FDM 3D printing - I know for my prototype I may only be able to use ABS Plastic. However, from research I have found that nylon may be best as it is more durable. But I am not too sure if this material is best suited as I haven’t been able to test it out especially now that we are in lockdown. I am looking for material that covers durability and flexibility.
Throughout the design process I have been checking in with those in construction to get some feed back. I am focussing on developing the base of shield first before adding in the parts for sound.

Decided to go with this outline from https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/25857-prusa-protective-face-shield-rc2#preview
They had already created a face mask used for PPE. Therefore, I used this shape to start building my own which helped. The pieces on the band were too thick to print which is where I had to reevaluate the materials and measurements of the man. It is so odd looking at things that have been 3D printed because they come out looking so thick but on the software are only a mm or so thick.

Booked through makerspace it was good to have some feedback on what I was wanting to do. Luca touched on my prototype as it was easy to now see what I have envisioned for my project and the next steps. I had started on developing my welder-like shield however, it wasn’t working the way I had hoped. It was to thick and Luca touched on that I could vacuum plastic on top, however that would make it quite heavy which wasn’t what I was going for. I decided to watch some different fushion360 tutorials and have a play around with different ideas around making/modelling the prototype. Especially, now that I knew what I was wanting it made it lot easier.

Looking at whether to develop the idea as is or if it is too robust - with welding style face shield.

Submission Feedback
Where to next?
It was really great knowing I was on the right track and encouraging to know even though I have struggled with this idea and combining the two projects together I have an opportunity to make a final product or try too. With this feedback the aim for this up-coming week I will try to make a prototype so I can reevaluate how my project can be 3D modelled and have the right measurements. With my designs I am still struggling with how it will look in fushion as I haven’t been able to get it right yet but will keep trying

What works:
- idea/concept validation went well. Covers the brief for covering both now and future factors. Looks at both safety hazards mentally and physically. Can be used not only in construction if it was developed.
What needs work:
- struggling to see an end result of what I am actually wanting this product to look like. Have struggled with fushion360 so need more practise. The model that I have been trying to make hasn’t come out exactly how I would like.
Aim: Week: 4 - 5 get more feedback from those around me about what they think it looks like or would like it look/feel like

Chosen Idea - Face Shield
Combining both Studio and Digital Fabrication - I decided to go with a face shield. Using the ideas of covid--19, PPE gear and the idea of redeveloping a mask that could make you feel safe but also have an outlet was an end result I came too with the help of my partner who currently works in construction + family and friends.
IDEA: Face Shield (2 different designs) Using the face shield to being able to use on any work site. On the inside having it’s own bluetooth headset so that you can link it to your phone and listen to music but also can be use to link into other face shields so that when you are listening to music it isn’t as much of a safety hazard.
How will this help? Being able to regather your thoughts and energy. When working there isn’t much time and space to reset or regather yourself. It is a stressful environment where other peoples vibes & energy can fill the room both negative and positive which can be difficult to keep up with.
Why this topic? As mentioned before a lot of friends and family work in construction. Therefore, this topic means a lot more. Looking at areas of development will help bring up conversations at home and with those around me that may need to help. Also this topic affects Pasifika peoples and with the construction industry having some of the highest suicide rates in Aotearoa. What I do find and research will all be important regardless of the assignment.
Aim: Week 4-5 Choose Idea/concept. Get mentor support/collaboration input/more research around concept and development of topic

Mental Health & Well-being in Construction
Definitely been struggling with developing an idea that can relate to both studio and digital fabrication. I am a bit nervous as I think I am overthinking this quite a bit which is causing my anxiety to go off haha. I think it is more from the idea of mental health & well-being in construction is a real problem and the more research I look into the more I get caught up.
Current solutions:
MATES on Site - suicide prevention initiatives where training is delivered on site and there is follow ups
Site Safe - tools for mental health online
ChasNZ - also mental health tool
There isn’t much products that you can get or use around the worksite to improve mental health or look after ones well-being.
After going and talking to friends and family in construction I put together the brainstorm below to gather which of these ideas could be made/followed through. It was a common if there was a game that could be made to play while on the worksite, a lot around anxiety free ideas and something can help you escape safely.
Aim: Week 3-4 have 1-2 ideas that I can go with research/look at concept/relate back to briefs
