Been thinking about what’d happen if Snotlout lived cause I can’t stand the thought of him being dead 💔

Sorry for all the barely organised word vomit I just have so many thoughts about him. I love him so much 😭

So that Book 12 has the same impact him not dying couldn’t be found out straight away. It probably would have to be a few weeks or even months after Book 12 before it’s revealed he’s alive so that Hiccup has time to process his death and mourn.

He’d probably be pretty estranged from every besides Hiccup. Sure he died a hero but the other vikings definitely would remember that he worked with Alvin and how he treated them. Redeeming yourself by dying is probably a lot easier when you actually die.

His relationship with Stoick, Gobber, and Baggybum in particular would probably suffer the most, even if they respect that he almost died saving him Hiccup. They remember him being a Traitor and he remembers them Turning Their Back on him and calling him horrible things. It would probably be super awkward and lead to Snotlout avoiding them. At least until Hiccup interferes and more or less forces them to fix it lol.

Hiccup would be extremely happy to have Snotlout back and finally have a chance to fix their relationship, especially since he blamed himself for Snotlout’s death. He’d be the one Snotlout sticks closest to since he’s really the only one who didn’t hate Snotlout before he almost died, though Camicazi and Fishlegs might make that harder. It would be hard for them to move on from what Snotlout did to Hiccup when they were younger but Hiccup’s determination and insistence that he doesn’t hate Snotlout would eventually convince Snotlout to at least try.

Fishlegs would still hate Snotlout. He’d insist they feed him to a dragon or something at first but he’d begrudging respect Hiccup’s decision to try and repair their relationship since Snotlout did sacrifice himself for Hiccup. Camicazi would be more conflicted. On one hand, he betrayed them all and tried to kill Hiccup, which she despises him for. On the other, he did something extremely Heroic for a boy in order to save his life, and now Hiccup’s insisting that he’s a Hero and that he forgives him. She’d let Hiccup try to fix their relationship but not without a few nasty comments.

Snotlout’s mental health after all this would be absolutely horrible lmao. I imagine that he had no idea whether his planned worked and if Hiccup survived, and even then if he actually managed to become King or defeat Furious. He fucked up his chance to die Heroically in order to redeem himself and now he’s seriously injured.

Then he finds out it worked and he’s reunited with Hiccup, which is great. Unfortunately he’s now faced with all the other people who he betrayed. They celebrate him as a Hero, but they all remember him as a Traitor as well. He still acts like an asshole in an attempt to cling to his past and push everyone else away, which doesn’t help. He hates himself for what he did to Hiccup when they were younger, and for siding with Alvin and betraying his tribe.

Now he’s stuck with no one but his horrible little cousin, who managed to one up him by becoming the King. It probably destroys Snotlout that the only one who doesn’t consider him a Traitor in some way is someone who he used to bully constantly, who now pities him and insists that he forgives him. He responds by being an asshole and trying to maintain some sense of normalcy, but that just makes him feel worse, because he’s supposed to be some kind of a Hero but he’s still bullying his little cousin who should hate him and has every right to, but instead pities him.

You know how Hiccup basically Gentle Parented his way into getting Toothless to be listen to him? He’d probably do the same sort of thing with Snotlout. Snotlout’s depressed as fuck and vikings don’t exactly have therapy, so whatever works I guess.

Oh yeah that could so good! I think every other time (besides in book 11 of course) there’s other people around when Snotlout’s trying to kill Hiccup or otherwise hoping for him to die, so him debating whether he goes after him or tells Stoick or just leaves him to it when there’s no else around could be a really good opportunity

When he took the cover off of Dogsbreath’s sword in book 2 could be good too. He realises exactly what he’s done and you can see him start to panic and regret what he’s done as the fight goes on. Maybe he subtly interferes to end the fight before anything bad happens by getting Toothless in the right place to bite Dogsbreath

Someone please talk to me about the httyd books ! I’m in such a craze rn and I need someone to talk to.

I’m convincing my friend currently to re-read them as they doesn’t remember any of it. I was talking to them about my ideas for a book accurate adaptation and they basically said: why don’t we do it ?

So if anyone has any anything to add, please do ! I’m thinking of opening a document anyone can add to if they have ideas.

Hiccup's far-too-big helmet with the far-too-big plume fitted Snotlout far better than it had ever fitted Hiccup.

Snotlout pulled down the front of the helmet.

Suddenly he looked like a stranger.

Snotlout urged Windwalker up with his knees, shouting at the top of his voice, "Heroes live forever!"

I 100% subscribe to the idea that Snotlout knew his fate. The stuff he said was so final but in his hasty, not affectionate way, plus he also sang the Last Ode of Grimbeard or whatever that song was called... I was rereading it and he was talking about how he was going to "come back" and make his dad and Gobber proud and "no one would turn their backs on him again", and if he truly knew that he wasn't gonna make it...ough.....

the tragedy of snotlout is that he will never be able to make up for his mistakes. but he has redeemed himself because he is an arrogant and narcissistic character, yet did the most selfless thing anyone could by sacrificing himself just so Hiccup might have the chance to live.

I think a good way to show that would be with him being nice to/protective of Adelaide. I’m honestly so disappointed that Snotlout had a whole ass little sister who wasn’t mentioned ONCE in twelve whole books

Also a good opportunity to have Hiccup be jealous of her… like Snotlout’s so nice to his little sister but hates his little cousin and Hiccup can’t stand it

I also posted it to TikTok and it’ll be on my YouTube pretty soon. I’m very happy with how this turned out - it started as just a quick little messy PMV/animatic but I ended up putting a lot more effort into it than I anticipated.

Tbh I have a whole animatic for the entire song in my head, but that’s a bit much at the moment. Maybe one day…

Furious and Hiccup II are so unfathomably important to me. Quite possibly my favourite tragic sibling story in any media. THEY DESERVED SO MUCH BETTER

Do you think Windwalker blames himself for Snotlout’s death? Like maybe he thinks he could have flown faster or swerved more or just not listened to Snotlout in the first place. Or maybe that he could have turned around and grabbed Snotlout before he hit the water if he had just been a little bit quicker, or even preventing him from falling off at all.

Maybe Windwalker started slowing down thinking that they’d made it through the worst of it and were in the clear, only for someone to get a lucky shot, and he blames himself for it?

He was so tired he was falling asleep while flying the next day, so I imagine he spent the whole night flying, looking for Snotlout or Hiccup and finding neither.

I don’t see any reason why he couldn’t have told Stormfly what happened, and she could have told Fishlegs and Camicazi that it was Snotlout who was shot down and not Hiccup. Maybe he was so tired he couldn’t speak, or he was so traumatised at seemingly losing Hiccup and having Snotlout shot down off his own back that he couldn’t get the words out.
