The purpose of this survey is to collect data about the experiences of people who feel sensations of nonhuman body parts, for example, wings or a tail. Some call these supernumerary phantom limbs, phantom shifts, otherlimbs, or astral limbs, though you may have other preferences for the words you use for your own experiences. If you haven't had those experiences, you can participate in this survey too. This survey was made for people who call themselves otherkin, therianthrope, furry, or any other potentially alterhuman or nonhuman identity. If you don't describe yourself with any of those words, you can participate in this survey too.
The survey will take you about 6 to 15 minutes. Everyone age 18 and up is welcome to fill out the survey at the below link, until it closes on July 6, 2024:
Survey Link
Who is running this survey and why: The person running this survey is Orion Scribner (they/them), an otherkin/therianthrope who has been making projects about these communities since 2005. I will use the results in my panel at an Internet-based convention later this year (OtherCon 2024), and in other future research projects.

i am 100% serious about my alterhuman identity. like being serious and assertive i am what i am first, self doubt and hate later.
and I think a lotta people in this community need to learn that,
the amount of "oh we aren't ACTUALLY that" or trying to overly state random stuff to make it seem like a lesser identity is sad. We need to unlearn the self disliking that was wired into our brains, we don't have to preemptively make ourselves/the community look better to antikin cuz newsflash! they already don't like us. and won't just because you're trying to cater every bit of yourself to them. be free. explore your identity, and let yourself actually be open about who you are without backtracking a million times. trust me it actually is so fucking freeing.

I'm not even joking but if you love to do quads but worry about hurting/scraping skin especially on hands etc look into pupplay gear if you haven't already. It's designed to pad and keep safe.

some times I feel like I’ve died at some point and my spirit just repossessed my body, and that in some ways feel like my body is rotting around me as I possess it. this has led to me relating to kintypes that involve death and being undead. I know these feelings probably have to do with my depression and other mental illnesses, but sometimes it’s a little comforting to seek out the experiences of people who embrace these feelings.

one of the things I’ve been thinking about lately is how I’m often not perceived as my age (and how I don’t feel like my age either but that’s not what this post is about). Im often mistaken for being younger then I am.
awhile ago I made a post about how I didn’t feel phantom horns when I was younger, but started to once I got older because of course a young dragon wouldn’t have their horns yet.
when thinking about how I’m often perceived as younger my dragon brain will tell me it’s because others can’t see my horns, they see me as young because I lack my horns, my clear sign that I’m an adult of my kind. my more human brain tells me the real reason why humans see me as younger is because my human body is short and young looking (and my piercings and dyed hair probably aren’t helping). If I were to add horns to it human people would probably see that as confirmation that I am younger, probably thinking back to when they saw a teenage cosplayer at the mall once.
still might get myself horns to wear but I’m going to have to deal with them not being the sign of maturity that I’d like them to be.

sometimes I'm a dragon in a human skin. sometimes I'm a human with a dragon brain. it doesn't have to be one or the other.

Mostly I need this reminder for myself, so here goes!
When questioning a new kintype, the most important thing is to remove as much influential stuff as possible. If you think you’re a dragon, and you keep researching what’s Normal for dragonkin, or immersing yourself in Flight Rising, you’re not learning about yourself as much as you are impressing an external idea into yourself. Asking yourself what feels right is more important than seeing how you compare, in the early stages and frankly in general.
Especially considering how startlingly easy it is to give yourself false memories based on external influence or internal expectation, as hard as it is I recommend leaving it alone for awhile as opposed to trying to label and box and define and display Right Now. It’s harder to unlearn something than it is to learn it, and if you’re convinced that you must be A Thing and then you talk about it with all of your friends, multiple layers of perceived pressure can prevent you from considering the idea that you might be wrong.
Let it percolate a little and come back to it before you start poking it with a stick. If it’s a kintype at all, it’ll come back louder and more defined when you can’t ignore it anymore, in my experience.

being nonhuman is weird.
there’s some days i’m happy to be human shaped, because i can eat things like grapes and bbq pringles and go see movies. i can dine out and drink sprite with every meal. i can use thumbs.
but on the inside, i’m not like humans. it doesn’t work “correctly”. i have urges that are considered taboo or just plain wrong for a “human”.
it’s something i’m trying to comes to terms with and accept.

Yknow when I first learned of this whole thing Otherkin was the umbrella term it all fell under where it was just "identifies as another kind of thing" and Therian existed as a term under the umbrella. Since I've gotten involved again I've noticed that they've experienced some kind of split where otherkin is taken as specifically identifying as a fantastical creature, and now Alterhuman is the catch all term for being a funky little guy
