In this day and age remakes of your favourite films and classics are pretty common.
Whether you like them or not, there’s pretty much nothing you can do to stop the inevitable from happening.
I’m pretty sure in my life time (assuming I live to around 80)  I’ll live to see a Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter reboot and that thought terrifies me…but the world goes on and there’s money to be made.
Yesterday it was announced that Warner Bros are looking to bring back The Matrix either as a reboot, sequel or prequel.  They believe the series can be their equivalent of what Star Wars now is to Disney.
The fact that films made in 1999 are already been looked at to reboot is pretty darn scary, what’s even scarier is the fact that in two years time The Matrix will be celebrating it’s 20th anniversary!
The initial reports are suggesting that neither Lana or Lilly Wachowski are involved and that to me is rather worrying.  I know that the 2nd and 3rd Matrix instalments were pretty poor and look at what Lucas did giving up Star Wars! But still, I don’t know if I want a Matrix film is it doesn’t involve the Wachowski’s.
Keanu Reeves once said he’d only come back if the Wachowski’s wrote and directed any follow up.  If that still rings true, will we see a sequel without a resurrected Neo? or maybe because of that Warner Bros will indeed go down the reboot road.
A prequel could focus on either a young Morpheus or Trinity et al being freed from the Matrix themselves but that’s about all I can think of.
Remember these are just rumours but enough sites are reporting it to mean there’s substantial weight behind then, especially with names like Zak Penn being thrown around in regards to writing duties.
For me, I’ll always have the original, a film I truly adore from start to finish. Whatever they do now won’t taint the memory any more than arguably the second and third film did.
I really don’t want this to happen but then again neither did I when I heard they were bringing in Tom Hardy to play Mad Max and Fury Road ended up being one of the best cinematic experiences I’ve ever had.
So I guess to conclude, reboots are out of our hands. There’s nothing we can do to stop them apart from piss and moan.  In 5-15 years (if that) we’ll have a new Jackman-less Wolverine, another actor portraying Tony Stark and approximately 3 new James Bond’s…doesn’t mean I’m going to like it but as Agent Smith once said…
“That, Mr Anderson…is the sound of inevitability”
