The Life of John Lennon
Beatriz Foz Guerrero
In music history, there’s no more important names such as John Lennon. Born on October 9, 1940, in Liverpool, England, he grew up to be one of the most important figures of the Cultural Revolution of the 70s. He not only created the Beatles and revolutionized rock music, but he also became a global icon and a personal model who inspired lots of people to fight for their rights, such as peace and justice. His journey, from the streets of Liverpool to his tragic death in 1980, is a narrative of talent and passion that shows how much he had the power to revolutionize the rock music industry completely.
John Lennon started his music life when he was fifteen years old in 1950. He started playing the guitar with some of his school friends and later created a band called Quarrymen. The name of his school inspired the band’s name: Quarry Bank High School. One year later, on 15 July 1956, John met Paul McCartney, who joined the Quarrymen. Never did he know that they would be a part of one of the most successful bands in the world. In 1959, the Quarrymen changed their band name to Moondogs. It was 1958 when George Harrison joined the band, and one year later, they changed the band’s name for the last time to Beatles. In 1962, Lennon got into Liverpool Art College, where he met Cynthia Powell, his future wife.
In 1960, the Beatles had their first international appearance in Hamburg, Germany, following the entrance of Ringo Star in the group, thus creating the definitive line-up of the Beatles. In 1963, they released their first LP called “Please, Please Me” and it only took one year for them to be a worldwide known band. In 1967, they released their most famous  album, “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”. They achieved such success because of their revolutionary style. Their songs had intense lyrics and the power to reach young people, as they were a new style for the time. In the same year, they recorded “Abbey Road”. Unfortunately, it was two years after their massive success, and Lennon left the Beatles because he was starting to get involved in drug problems. In 1971, Lennon said in an interview: “I started the band, I finished the band. It’s simple like that”. In the same year, the album “Let It Be” was released, recorded years ago, as a way to say goodbye to the fans and finish an era.
Another character in Lennon’s life appeared in 1966 was Yoko Ono, the Japanese visual artist and activist who would marry him three years later. Before he left the “Beatles”,       Lennon and Ono were arrested for drug possession, and in the same year, he got divorced from Cynthia. They secretly married in 1969, and later on, in the same year, they both went to Toronto, Canada, to protest in favor of peace during the Vietnam War. In September 1971, Lennon released his first solo album after leaving the band called “Imagine.”
Lennon was shot on November 8, 1980, when he was coming back to his house in Manhattan, New York, by Mark David Chapman, who is now in prison for the rest of his life. As we close this chapter of John Lennon’s life, we are reminded not just of a musical icon but a visionary man who inspired generations. Lennon said that art can transform the world and that being authentic and brave is an essential factor in doing that.
